Very true. I was thinking more along the lines of a black funk band that only had one or two white members. There were several back in those days. I also remember white rock bands that had maybe one black member, such as The Doobie Brothers, although they could get funky when they wanted to. lol

I got the idea for the thread watching the Asian girl dance on "Soul Train" and she could get down and do her thing with the rest of them.
You can be what other people consider "totally out of place" but if you love what you do, you ain't out of place at all.

Off Subject: Does anyone know that woman's name so I can look it up on some search engines?

"Heatwave" had some white boys in the band. As a matter of fact, one of them was Rod Temperton who went on to write most of those hit on Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album.

Hell yeah! Rod was one of Quincy Jones' secret weapons. cool

Cheryl Song is the one you're looking for.

I used to love seeing...

...Rosie Perez shake it up on Soul Train.

She always had this really angry look on her face when she danced. Super sexy.

Ndeed!! Rod did so much for R&B/Soul! Just a small sampling of the tunes he wrote:

Boogie Nights
Always and Forever
The Groove Line
Star of A Story
Gimme The Night
Love X Love
Look After Love
Thriller
Off The Wall
The Lady In My Life
Rock With You
The Dude
Baby Come To Me
Back On The Block
Sweet Freedom (Michael McDonald)
Razzamatazz
Something Special
The Secret Garden
Mystery (Manhattan Transfer)
You Put A Move On My Heart (Mica Paris, Tamia w/Quincy Jones)
Stomp (Bros. Johnson)
Treasure (Bros. Johnson)
All About The Heaven(Bros. Johnson)
Gettin' To The Good Part (Herbie Hancock)
Lite Me Up (Herbie Hancock)
Turn On The Action (Patti Austin w/ Quincy Jones)
Every Home Should Have One (Patti Austin)

Funk is definately universal. The only qualification you need is being cool enough to like it.

I saw another asian girl on there a few weeks ago that I had forgotten about. She looks like she could be her younger sister. She's got the extremely long hair too.....just not quite as long as the other asian lady.

The Dan Reed Network..although they weren't a "true funk" band in the classic sense, they could get funky.

..and it's cool to see someone mention The L.A. Boppers. "Is The Best" was the jam! My dad's favorite line was "Make sure you always know what's going on..make sure your homework's not undone".

They sure did. I had totally forgotten about them.

I didn't know this.
When I first saw this band-name posted,
I thought that maybe the poster misunderstood the title as meaning "Black Funk Acts with Small Dicks" or somethin'.

They were Scottish.
Anyway, they were an all-white band at the beginning, but their drummer Robbie McIntosh died of heroin overdose in 1974 and they replaced him with a black drummer, Steve Ferrone.
