The Village Voice music poll is compiled annually from the lists of hundreds of critics. This is the first poll taken since the firing of Voice music editor Robert Christgau, and at first glance it does look like participation has gone down a bit. In 2004 over 800 critics participated and it seems that only 494 ballots were received this year.

I find hard to fathom that Van Hunt gets no consideration from any critics whatsoever in pop or R&B circles. It's as if he never put out a record.

Maybe they just don't like him? I think he's a bit on the dull side. Talented? Sure, but I just don't care for his music.

The P&J album poll has never been too friendly to r&b or pop, I think. Those genres seem to be more likely to get recognized on the singles poll.

I guess that's something. Interestingly enough, Nelly is one of only 2 acts with 2 top-20 singles (and they're all Timberland songs).

Musoc critics suck...many people don't listen to great music because these "pseudo gods of taste" guide them... confused

Reasonable ears can disagree, but I use this poll as an example. Van Hunt's album got pretty decent reviews from a lot of sources, but then they just forgot about him.

Did he even get any radioplay or video play??
At least his first album had some obvious singles and he got some sopport on the Something New soundtrack confused
He's so underappreciated. R&B radio doesn't even give him a chance
If you will, so will I

The Belle & Sebastian album "The Life Pursuit" was excellent.

Some of the other albums on the list, like "Rather Ripped", "The Eraser", and "Show Your Bones" were honestly kind of let downs to me. I listened to these albums a few times now they're collecting dust. It almost seems like the only reason they made the list was because of the band/artist's "cool" status - Sonic Youth, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Thom Yorke - not necessarily because the albums were all that great.

I was a little disappointed when I first heard 'Show Your Bones', but after seeing the YYYs live a few times last year, the album grew on me. So much so that it made my own personal top 20.
