I love her, but I wouldn't include that Kenny Roger's duet as one of her finer moments.

I'm not 100% familiar with her entire body of work, but almost everything I've heard is amazing. What makes her stand out as an artist is that she writes A LOT of her own stuff. Unlike the country acts now.

I actually WOULD categorize "Islands In The Stream" in her top-10. Also missing are "Hard Candy Christmas" and "Coat Of Many Colors". "Coat" and "Jolene" are her signature songs.

Kenny Rogers was the man back in the day; but sadly everything he's put out in the past decade or so seems like him just "talking" to music.

I shouldn't be mean or snarky to Islands in the Stream, because it is a fun and completely loveable guilty-pleasure song. I just wouldn't rank it as one of her great career moments.

Quite embarrassing to admit this, but Coat of Many Colours is one of the few songs that always gets me a little sobby - every time.

It's more than that - she has literally written THOUSANDS of songs (maybe 5,000...I can't recall the exact number). There are very few people that rival her level of prolificness. I don't know that anyone ever expected her to be anything more than Porter Wagoner's sidekick. She's done so much quality work and puts on a great live show. She's been one of my favorites since I was a child. In fact, this is one of the first albums I can recall hearing:

damo - nothing embarrassing about your admission. lol It's an earnest and moving song. So moving in fact that even Shania Twain's cover (I don't care for any of her own material) is pretty emotional.

And I love that this thread was started by Funkpill. lol

Speaking of crying, when I was a wee lad, this one did me in every time. "A lot of folks that follow my career know that I write a lot of sad songs, and this one is absolutely pitiful." lol

I think for her best work, you're either going to have to go far back in her catalogue or stick with her most current work (her foray into more bluegrass-oriented music). This is a strong collection, and it includes her Grammy-winning take on Collective Soul's Shine:

The Essential Dolly Parton

Unfortunately, a lot of her early albums (which are very good) aren't always easy to come by. These are readily available in any good music store:

Just Because I'm a Woman

Coat of Many Colors

Jolene

More than you asked for...had you actually asked me for anything in the first place. biggrin
