Kelly Osborne's Horrific Remake Of Madonna's Papa Don't Preach

I was in Blockbuster's Video a couple of days ago looking for some movies to rent when all of a sudden I heard something over the speakers called music, if you want to classify it as that. They were playing Kelly Osborne's video for "Papa Don't Preach"(the Madonna song which went to number #1 back in 1986). TERRIBLE!!! I mean she really could have kept this crap. Just because she has a successful tv show, it seems she is going to try to milk it for what it's worth by releasing an album.

This lousy song and video also confirms something else about music now-a-days. These musicians need to learn their instruments. Now-a-days in rock you can't even hear a good solo(at least during the 80's metal years, the guitarists in the bands could lay down a competent solo). These musicians in these thrash/metal/rap just know how to play chords and vamps and that's it. They can't even come up with a good solo {which normally requires some improvisational know-how}

As least Madonna(who's not the greatest vocalist in the world)sounded inspired and as a vocalist actually sounded decent on this song. Kelly's vocals left WHOLE LOT to be desired. Maddy's original was pop but had a nice r&B feel to it. Kelly's version is just a bunch of musicians clawing away at their instruments. Awful I tell you.

MissMignon

the frightening thing is that she's succeeding.
I see this video too much on MTV. I guess when you're on the top, no matter what you do, people will buy it. neutral

It's a sad time for music sad

They were showing an Ozzfest special on MTV (in Europe) this weekend and kurt loder was showing flashbacks of a young kelly talking about her musical tastes...Kurt asked her if she was still a big Hanson fan...rolleyes...she said "no, i've grown out of that phase".

It turns out she was into n'sync !! if you ask her today, she'll deny it with her last breath!

funny how people change...

People DO change, she's young; common! Don't judge.

And even she takes her cover with at least some humour. She is enjoying her little fame moment. I do too; she and her brother are cute. Pure entertainment.

I didn't mean to judge her. I'm all for change because i think that when you change you bring all your past influences with you and that's a good thing. What i don't like is people who deny what they were because they have changed and the way they were doesn't fit in correctly with who they are today.

you know what i mean?

You mean, like Prince not performing Sexy MF no more?
Saying; 'be respectful to women' and then records "She Loves Me 4 Me" ?

Then yeah...never forget where you came from... I think Sexy MF pays a bigger compliment than She Loves Me 4 Me, but then again, who am I?

I actually kinda like the remake. Not for Kelly Osbourne or her singing, but for hearing a rock version of Papa don't Preach. I always thought it would be a good combination. Though Kelly's could've been better. I used to sing Papa Don't Preach like the lead singer of Metallica and bang out the chords on electric guitar, I thought it would be cool if someone could do it like that.

Gooey, I think your argument is a little flawed. That's like saying, "You know, that former Satinist became a Christian, and that's cool, but he should still rip the heads off bats. Just because he's changed his beliefs, that shouldn't reflect in his behavior. Damn..."

read my post again, i'm not saying that a satanist turned christian should still rip the heads off bats...i'm saying that he (actually, she in my case) shouldn't deny it. That's two very different things.

Personally, I like her version of the song, more than I'll ever like Madonna's original. It's pretty obvious to me that she's not trying to be taken seriously, it's about having fun. Madonna's song doesn't hold my interest, and doesn't have a bit of the fun element (though I know it's about a serious subject).

It would be awful and pretentious if I thought Kelly wanted it to be taken under a microscope for serious music study, so to speak. But her version comes off as almost a punk/rock version, tongue in cheek. And hell, if that's what she was going for, it works for me. I'm not running out to buy it, but I don't turn the dial when I hear it.

You want to hear some terrible cover versions, just listen to any cover by Michael Bolton - he wants to be taken seriously!
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

First, if you just heard this song, you are a little behind the times.

Second, I think her version is pretty good. I don't think she has a huge talent as a singer, but I like her remake of 'Papa Don't Preach.'

No not exactly. I knew this was out there but hadn't heard it. I don't listen to radio basically except for my jazz stations and old school R*B every now and then. MTV and BET is out for me...I'm not missing ANYTHING.

As a cover tune, it's not the worst I've heard.

Her voice is heavily sythed and studio made (tolerable), but the "rock" edge they added 2 the song isn't as bad as u say.

What I hate is how easily it is 4 the offspring of superstars 2 get a recording contract (Kelly, Enrique Iglesias, Jakob Dylan, Wilson-Phillips...etc.).

I know some of them actually have talent, and I know that the door is only opened 4 them, success is not guaranteed. Jakob and Enrique's done well in that respect.

But it sucks 4 those of us who have 2 go about the process of label shopping and continuous auditions...am I sounding envious?

mad

Oh well...I needed 2 vent. biggrin

I dig the rocked-out version better than Madonna's version. I don't think Madonna started writing music with merit until the Like a Prayer album. She grew a lot as a musician/songwriter throughout the 90s.
