My ranking of the band's LPs (Sade, after all, is a BAND, named for a person, but not only that person...to my ears Paul S. Denman's bass playing is JUST as important as Sade Adu's vocals)...at any rate:
1) Stronger Than Pride 2) Promise 3) Diamond Life 4) Love Deluxe (These four are all VERY close in quality and together represent the bands best work.) 5) Lover's Rock 6) Sade Live (Excellent work, but really not in the same superior category as the four aforementioned works.) How anyone can say the first two LPs were lacking in any way is beyond me. To me, Promise has the strongest set of individual songs overall, but Stronger Than Pride is a overall thematically stronger and more cohesive and thus slightly better LP when considered as a whole work. Diamond Life just breathtakingly amazing...this was a record with packed with raw emotion "Cherry Pie", "Frankie's First Affair", "Your Love Is King" "When Am I Gonna Make a Living?" are utterly amazing works, although the LP was not quite as focused and the band not quite as realized as it would quickly become...And maybe her two best individual songs are on Love Deluxe - "Kiss of Life" and "Cherish the Day". And old girl is definitely easy on the eyes and got herself an old soul to match. | |
