Diana Ross-Diana: what a classic

hooking up with chic producers was the best thing she did for her career with the Diana album. She was mos def at her creative peak with this record in 1980, right up there with teena marie, mj, the jacksons and my guilty pleasure, latoya jackson's first album

Wow alphastreet, Teena Marie, The Culture Club, The Jackson family, and now Diana Ross, that`s not bad wink

It`s a great album, her best, and that says a lot... "Upside down", "My old piano" and "Friend to friend" are my favorites. The deluxe edition is amazing.

Rick's is really great. I love that concert. I didn't buy Donna's because the second disc is her 12 Inch Dance Collection which I already had. If I didn't already have it though, I would have definately grabbed that one also.

aw thanks, I'm really big on 80's music and don't understand how other people also born in the 80's like today's music. I like some of it but it doesn't compare to the brilliance of yesterday and constantly find myself telling people, you know, it ripped off so-and-so from back then and they either don't believe me, are surprised or think I'm just too weird for liking older stuff. Good thing I was around those songs as a young kid, I went on to discovering more songs from that time that I missed out on(was born in 83 in case you wondered)

You came to this world at the last great breath of truly great Pop/R&B/Soul...before all the sampling...dont ever feel weird! U can always ask me about stuff I'm in my early 30's but tend to listen to older music as well. It's just better!

2 years before me then smile I understand what you mean, i don`t like the kind of music that comes out these days either. The 70s and 80s were the best decades, which ì`m sure most of the orgers would agree on.

The 12" inch mix of "What you gave" is really energetic, a lot of fun nod

I don`t have James` album, but i like the deluxe edition of "Bad girls", mainly because of the "long version" of "On the radio", the part with the violins... music

yes I do feel weird. In fact I was born the week mj's beat it was number one and right around the time motown 25 happened, I always thought of that as something special smile and I was around music a lot from an early age like the r&b, dance and rock of that time, and music of my cultural background and religious stuff as well.

wow it's nice to hear that people born around that time or after me also feel the same way. I have come to the right board, even if I'm not a prince fanatic but am fond of him and a casual listener. I also like the 90's a lot since I lived through it as a kid and teenager but when my friends say they miss the 90's when it comes to music, I could only partially relate cause it really started in the 80's for me. But when it comes to tv shows, movies, fashion etc. in the 90's then I could relate. I felt like I had already experienced great music from an early age and that these newbies were all ripoffs and still are though I might like a song or two of theirs without becoming a huge fan. But that's not to say I shun today's music completely, there are songs I really like and will play for awhile but I'm always drifting back to older stuff. I briefly liked rap & hip hop in the 90's and that also helped me discover some more oldies, especially when I would read credits in the albums or my parents would say HEY THEY STOLE FROM THAT SONG then I would go and check out the original and enjoy that one better smile

Personally i think the music from the 80s has aged better than much of the music that was made in the 90s.
Maybe it`s because i`ve grown up listening to it, or maybe music from the 80s really has aged better hmmm

You're not weird at all. You liking the older stuff just means you have taste and a mind of your own rather than just liking stuff because the rest of the world happens to like it at the time.

It's not an age thing either and you don't just start "not liking current music because you're getting older". I'm 39 now and I first started complaining about the direction R&B was heading in 1985, the summer after I graduated high school, and I was only 17 then. When the 1990s rolled around, I was in my early 20s then and I was full-fledged "bitching" about it.

You're completely normal, you're just an individual. The people who are actually making the so-called music on the radio these days need to be following your lead.

I honestly don't hear any difference in the music of this decade from the 1990s....at least R&B anyway. It's still midtempo, it's still stripped down, and it still has those weak shit hop sounding drum machines.

aw thanks for the compliment that's sweet smile I admit I went through a phase in the late 90's when I liked stuff other people liked too but it didn't last long cause it was all a show and I ended up giving away most of the CD's I got at that time because I only liked 3 songs on them and it was taking up space. But it was r&b and hip hop stuff, not really the boyband stuff which EVERYONE liked and I couldn't stand. Okay I liked a couple of those songs but not enough to buy the CD's and gush about how cute nick carter was ughhh. Late 90's were all about janet jackson with her velvet rope CD for me and people my age didn't think it was cool that I went to see velvet rope, they were showing off their p diddy & lil kim tour ticket stubs and I was like ughhh they don't KNOW good shows they just go to them for looking cool, what a waste!

music a superb album from beginning to end.My favorite songs are "Upside Down","Tenderness","Friend To Friend","My Old Piano" and "Have Fun (Again)".With this album,Diana was able to enter the 80s with a great album, her most successful album ever,in fact.

I heard that Chic weren't happy with the ending results. Becoz they made her record the song Chic-wise vocally, but she came back to the studio behind their back and did a WHOLE different take which is the released version.

This is true and the deluxe edition has both versions. I gotta be honest - Diana, for all her ego issues, was right about the original mix. The original Chic versions downplay her vocals so much. It really was like a Chic record with backing vocals by Diana Ross. It sounds off.

it's not as bad as we make it out to be
though I dislike the bulk of it
me & Icicle had this convo before

about "I Was Made For You" though
who is the male vocalist on this track?
I know it's written by Clarence Franklin

back to Diana...
this is the only solo album of hers I own:

which I bought for "Muscles"
but ended up liking some other stuff from there
"Fool For Your Love"/"Turn Me Over (interlude)" to be exact
