R&B VS Disco in the late 70's...what was the difference What was the difference between R&B and Disco in the late 1970 (1977-1979) Can someone PLEEEASE tellme the difference?? And give me an example of some artist! | |

Basically, soul acts started incorporating elements of disco into their music -- witness Earth, Wind & Fire making "Boogie Wonderland" or The Isley Brothers' "It's a Disco Night Tonight."
However, 1970s disco and soul music were not the same thing. You had plenty of soul acts who were doing their thing irrespective of disco -- acts like Teddy Pendergrass and Parliament/Funkadelic were prominent and Rick James was emerging during this period. I feel if anything the backlash from white American hard rock fans who spoke out against disco lumped it and soul music together made these two seem indistinguishable. IMO some of Stevie Wonder's best music came out during this time and it was very NOT Disco. U also had numerous other bands and songstresses (like Rufus featuring Chaka Khan and Minnie Riperton, not to mention The Isley Brothers doing complex arrangements that were "groove heavy" but not disco...Some artist experimented with disco on a track or two on their redunctats | |
