In all likelihood, the suggested albums are Urban Hang Suite and Embrya.

All of 'em. For real. Max's voice is beautiful, and he uses Sade's band. What more could you want?

Maxwell is cool. His first album Urban Hang Suite sounded a lot like a Sade project, not surprising because it was coproduced by Sade guitarist and saxman Stuart Mathewman. His second album Embrya was also great, though the overall feel was totally different, more airy and less dark, watery and very flowing.

The third one, Now, sounded a bit too average for me.

And then there´s the R.Kelly penned song Fortunate, check out the video on youtube., and also check out the Sweetback debut album ( actually the Sade band) where Maxwell and Amel Larrieux sang on two songs ( Softly, Softly).

And definitely get the maxi cd Ascension, with the Ascension remix based on the instrumental of the SOS Bands No One´s Gonna Love You ...great stuff.

Maxwell Essentials:

Embrya is ok, but it sounds like outtakes from UHS. Also, get the Life soundtrack just so you can have "Fortunate" or maybe you can still buy the Maxi-sinlge of it.

"Now" is much more plastic than the silken divine "Embrya". I would suggest any new listener listen to Embrya--until they get it. wink

Okay, his first album is brilliant. Smooth, but without getting sticky. It is sexy and seduces.
The second album is Maxwell thinking he´s Kate Bush and, for most part, he gets away with it. It ruined the moment he had, though.
The third album is just plain whack. Sorry to say. Even the best thing on there does not make me wanna dance, music, sex, romance as the first album did.

Him having his biggest hit with an R. Kelly song says something about his US audience, damnit.

Also check out the live EP.

But best are the singles to his first three singles; they have re/recordings and extended plays and indeed; heavenly remixes. One of them even has Mica Paris on backing bvox, but that is not even the best.

Urban Hang Suite and the MTV album are superb. The rest fall short. Embrya is almost his "Neither Fish Nor Flesh".

nod the only other album besides these that comes in to a close third favorite is the "Now" album. Embrya didn't do much for me, although it has some cool cuts on there, i can't play the darn thing straight through like his first two albums....
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

A lot of people didnt like "Now" and I thought that was his return to his roots actually. "Embrya" was where he got full of himself and wanted to try something new but he ended up alienating his fan base with that. He was very lucky that "Fortunate" came around because it kept him in people's minds while they were trying to forget him after "Embrya." I have no idea why he didn't include 'Fortunate' on "Now" though? That would have put that album over the top.

i disagree, not just anybody could have done the "Now" album, especially with Max's vocal talents. The "Embrya" album was just plain ole weird and uninteresting to me. it may had been interesting if i was trying to slit my wrists and wanted the perfect music to go with it. but again this is just my personal opinion. I understand that others just can't get enough of the "Embrya" album, but i can.

exactly. he should have left off the studio version of "this woman's work" and replaced with "fortunate".

Exactly! Or maybe dropped the title track because that didn't move me at all.

confused Well, I can only hope so. That sounds maniacal! biggrin

Maxie did beautifully vocally on Now--to me, he can't go wrong. Then again, he'd sound incredible if he released an album of nursery rhymes. To me, that doesn't make it the most quality album. Embrya was a huge risk and he disappointed a lot of fans looking for something regular and packaged. I guess I'm just one of the few that can get into it.

It took me a good year or two to realize Embrya's strength, however.

I will say this though, I am starting to warm to Embrya as I hear songs from it again on AOL radio.
