Afropunk

anyone this this movie? http://imdb.com/title/tt0379162/

it's really a great documentary about identity. blacks who dig rock music (mostly punk and hardcore) and where they feel they fit in or don't.

members of fishbone, bad brains and tv on the radio are in it.

just a heads up. (sorry if something like this has already been posted)

I saw this movie back in 2003 at an art gallery presentation. The filmmaker was touring with the film at the time, there was a Q+A afterwards and @ time he was amidst distribution negotiations.

The film probably has changed a lot since then. I remember my friend and I being angry at some of the individuals who were featured in the movie. Also, it was still a very rough indie film, so he was still taking suggestions and getting feedback @ that time.

Where did you see it? Is it available on DVD now?

i'd heard about it for the last 2 years or something and then forgot about it. then saw it featured on netflix several months back. i really enjoyed it.
my boyfriend is half haitian and has always felt shunned in the indie/rock scene until fairly recently. he felt really good about it.

its out on dvd now and james spooner is working on a new movie (not a documentary).

That's really cool.

Nice to hear it's on DVD.

It had a little healthy buzz around it back in 03/04. BET.com even did a write-up on it that generated some discussion. I thought that was ok. It would be even better if they showed the actual film on the network, tho.

i think it's really heartening that so many people could come together with the same experiences and the whole..."i don't have to TRY hard anymore to prove i'm "black" being what and who i am naurally automatically makes me part of that community." is a great message for those who feel outcast and as though they have to cater to one group or another for acceptance. it was really emotional for me, also being a minority to see people working this out for themselves.

i know, for me, being mexican-american and a deathrocker/punk/alternative music listener there were times in my youth where i felt very alienated.
the film had a few flaws but overall i think it can ONLY do good for the kids who now are going through this same "where do i fit in/what do i have to do to fit in?" thing and also those of us who are older to look back and know it was cool all along that we were individuals. cool
