Mostly my music leads itself. An interest in one artist leaks over onto interest in related acts, or their influences or favourites. Sometimes something jumps out at me on it's own (k-Os, Scissor Sisters) and sometimes it's been an artist I've heard and ignored my whole life, and just woke up to their sound one day. (Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot)
Once in a while I read an interesting sounding review or article on a certain act and actively seek them out. Sometimes I'm dissapointed, sometimes not. I don't listen to radio much, except once in a while I'll play the local Oldies station. Late night (when they actually still play videos!) I'll tune into Much and MuchMore Music to catch up on newer stuff. Sometimes I dig through my friends' collections to see if anything catches my fancy and beg, borrow, or steal it. (just for a while) I don't believe in looking down on a certain style or genre of music just for the sake of it. I'm not one of those people that blows off an entire genre. mostly personal and im open to stuff people give me to listen to no matter what genre/style of music it is. as far as people hatin on others taste....its all subjective cuz alot of time's that person dissing on other people like some questionable shit themselfs. | |

There might be a decent song on a Justin Timberlake album (relax, I only said might be!) I am turned off by the fact that it took a committee of people to create it. Ditto Simpson sisters, Britney, and... Janet! I might actually buy a Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis album, but one that gives credit to Janet as the artist seems like a lie to me. I like to listen to artists who, for better or worse, are actually responsible for what I'm hearing. That's why Grammy recognizes Prince, even though the 3121 wasn't a huge hit. He's an artist who created the music on his album all by his lonesome! It's part of his legacy, not just a "sign of the times" If it's his weakest album, it's still comparable to a quick sketch by Picasso; worth more than 100000 Bob Ross paintings. My ass and my dick determine whether I like a song. If my ass hears a song and starts to wanna shake on it's own, then I know it's a jam. If my dick gets the urge to take a stranger home at two in the morning and get into some of those filthy, un-natural thangs, then I know it's a good slow jam. As far as just sitting there, listening to a song, and saying ...."Oh, that's a beautiful song, it's just lovely, it's such a pretty song, so uplifting, it changed my life"....fuck that shit!
