Diana Ross Media Blitz

Diana Ross makes TV appearances to support new cd, I LOVE YOU.

Tuesday, Jan 16:
ABC's Good Morning America
Live with Regis and Kelly
Late Show w/ David Letterman

Januray 26:
The Martha Stewart Show

February 19
Inside the Actors Studio (Bravo)

Ross is embarking on the media blitz to support her new album "I Love You", which hits stores and online retailers on Tuesday.

It's a bit of synchronicity, for interest in Ross' group of origin, Motown's Supremes, has picked up recently with the success of the film "Dreamgirls," starring Beyonce (as the Ross-like "Deena") and Jennifer Hudson.

Peter Asher produced nine of the tracks and Steve Tyrell did five on "I Love You," which is a collection of some of Ross' favorite songs about love, including "I Want You," a song co-written by her brother T-Boy Ross, for Marvin Gaye; "More Today Than Yesterday," the uptempo '60s hit by one-hit wonder Spiral Starecase; "To Be Loved," the '50s ballad written by Berry Gordy Jr.; and Paul McCartney's "I Will," among others.

Apart from "Dreamgirls," interest in Ross' music has also increased since Motown's well-received release last year of "Blue," an album of jazz standards recorded in 1971 and '72, as a companion to the soundtrack to Ross' movie, "Lady Sings the Blues."

Its great to see but really not that unusual with artists doing new albums and then going the promotion route, its very smart though especially for older artists and ones that have wide appeal (meaning not just one genre of fan). I think this record will do nicely and get Diana out of that "bad press" state that she had been in. I also think with Dreamgirls, and the death of James Brown there has been a surge of people trying to get into the past, its a shame it takes death to do it.

It`s good... Considering the choice of songs, some might think the album has a kind of karaoke sound, and some songs do. BUT most of the songs are good, and especially her voice sounds better than ever here. The best thing about this album is the arrangements, the orchestra. My favorite track is her cover of "To be loved" music

"Some wish to be a king or a queen
some wish for fortune and fame
but to be truly, truly, truly loved
is more than all of these things" cloud9

I really do hate they are trying to force people to buy it by giving it away for free on the radio...

Just saw her on Letterman. She looked and sounded really good (this from a mostly non-fan). She sang "More Today Than Yesterday." I think this'll be a nice CD.

Yeah, me too. There's a lot of nice song choices on this CD, enough to make me wanna hear her versions.

While it's great that Diana is back with a new CD,it's kinda sad that so many of today's Old School artists have to release cover albums neutral I mean, come on,it's getting ridiculous. The latest CDs from Natalie Cole,Gladys Knight,Micki Howard are cover albums....the last CDs from Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle were covers albums...the new CD from Dionne Warwick is a covers album...and now Diana is back with a...you guessed it....covers album.Don't get me wrong,I'm sure these ladies can take an old song and make it their own,and the Natalie Cole CD has some fine moments. It just bothers me a little that the record labels won't accept an album of new songs from these artists. They assume that classic,well-known songs are the only thing that fans would buy from these ladies.

I don't know if it's a huge strech for older artists, though. Back then, they did covers so quickly, it was almost hard to tell in some cases who recorded the original. It's not the worst idea in the world if the covers are good, and most of them on this CD are good.

Interesting note. I bought the import and only one track appears to be different. The import verison has "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", which is way over the top and silly, even though it features Brain May. In other words, as interesting as it sounds, US audiences aren't missing anything. So the US verison has in it's place what sounds (from the sample) a very nice straight forward verison of "Take My Breath Away". Good idea. Could be an exellent single, if they decided to release any (doesn't seem like they are since Diana is doing different songs everywhere).

Perhaps.I just think it's a shame that we can't get some truly new music from these artists.Re-making classic songs is too easy.Wouldn't it be great if Diana released an exciting dance/pop album filled with all new tracks?

I heard she's going on tour for this album.

Seeing her all subdued singing I Love You which is a nice song but her just standing there...I felt a little melancholy. I love the Diana that always has the big hair, big smile, big lashes, some sort glitter body suit singing Mirror Mirror (damn, that bass line is tough) or Ain't No Mountain High Enough.
