De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising

I was just listening to this album for the first time in a long while, and it really hit me that it's still an amazing album after all this time. nod

So basically, this is just my appreciation thread for De La Soul, and this album in particular. I haven't listened to De La Soul is Dead in ages either. Maybe I should pull that one out next. hmmm

Anyhoo, not gonna type it out again, but I'll say the gist.

De La = innovation in hip hop for me.

Buddy 12" remix > Buddy LP version

"The Magic Number" always stuck with me.

haha I don't mind this redux.

they were innovative, although it is important to note that mainly they admitted they were trying to be like Ultramagnetic MC's, whose Critical Beatdown a year earlier would also be one of the genre's best.

Buddy with all those guests is WAY MORE essential than the album version. The Taana Gardner beat is better too.

My cut is "Potholes in My Lawn".

Easily one of the most important hip hop joints of all time. A classic. It introduced the "skit" that a lot of MCs do/did. They were the first to cross-promote their hip hop acts (JBs, ATCQ) on their ambum. The 1st "backpacker" group when that term wasn't even around. Smart lyrics, impeccable production (Prince Paul). An underappreciated group to say the least.

In my opinion their next effort was more interesting, but for a debut, 3 Feet was pretty groundbreaking!

"The Magic Number" is not a favorite one of mine actually. I guess it's because it's played a lot. hmmm

My favorites are "Plug Tunin'" and "Potholes in my Lawn". nod

The video for that song is DOPE.

I think it was just them and their friends dancin' in the woods. lol It was grainy and delicious.

Friends/people-in-the-neighborhood videos. So common around that time. I think of L.O.N.S. "Case of the PTA" vid.
