VH1 Classics get the Axe?

Anybody hear about this? If this is true my cable bill has just been cut in half, because I'll no longer need any of those so-called "premium" channels. Anyone got news on this?

So wait there eliminating the stations that actually "play" videos? Can i get MTV off my cable, and while im at take VH1 and its 400 reality shows. and they wonder why people tune into YouTube. If it was up to me and they are lucky its not, I would fire everyone at MTV,VH1 , vj's, trl people, reality shows cancelled, the hills,my sweet 16, i love new york, the white rapper, fire them all, every last one of them, clean house. Then re-program both, set up the playing field fairly, no more showing Beyonce 16 times a day, if you have a video out you get ONE PLAY a day thats it, but no Vj's, no guest hosts, everyone gets 1 play a day. then have special shows where you show blocks of videos, Latin, Flashback videos,80's. Sure this is what VH1 classic was doing but theres no reason and no need for seperate channels, both of these channels (MTV and VH1) used to do this, they are both part of the reason the industry is the way it is, and while we are at it, can BET too. The only station right now that is actually doing it right is the IMF station, 24/7 videos, no vjs, in one hour you will see more videos than MTV plays in a whole month.

I don't really mind the VJ's that much, especially if they provide some interesting trivia about the artist when introducing them. The hosts on VH1-1 Classics were fun to listen to because they always had something interesting to say about the videos.

I don't understand why MTV and VH-1 are so steadfastly sticking to this anti-music format. The reason both networks became popular in the first place was because they played MUSIC. In the late 80's, early 90's when they started sprinkling their programming with a few other types of shows like Liquid Television, Remote Control, Just Say Julie, etc... it was OK for a little variety. But now they've gotten too carried away with it and there's another generation of people growing up not even knowing how cool and influential these channels used to be when they first came out. What the hell does "My Sweet 16" have to do with music?!

I can watch VH-1 Classic for hours, literally, because they seldom repeat the same videos until hours later.

I agree, i more or less was talking about the Vj's that MTV employs, the ones that do things like TRL and some new video morning show, where its just like TRL only its in the morning, same videos. I was saying a few months ago, i was changing channels and caught the end of a MTV show and in the corner by the credits it was showing a clip of a video and under it said "MTV home of music 24/7" WTF??? are they insane, can we sue for false advertising

I'm not surprised. We can't give the public even a glimpse of anything resembling music, can we? They might want more.

if they would just stick to showing music videos all day vh1 classic would have very little overhead and make money off the commercials ...i cant seee how a station could lose money with that kind of format...arent music videos still free?

This is so true. I think that is part of the reason why you just don't see or hear the real musicians/real talents in the mainstream. If the general public finally gets a barometer to measure REAL MUSIC, the lid would be blown off this farce that's taken over the "music" industry.

Oh of course. That's the reason that radio purposely keeps real musicians from getting any airplay. People are always saying shit like....."there's still good music out there but you have to look for it"....Well, why the hell isn't radio playing it then?

MTV Nets layoffs include executives

MTV Networks has handed out pink slips to several senior-level executives as part of its move to cut 250 jobs this week.

In addition, the company has decided to shut down the MTV World linear channels superserving young multicultural viewers.

Among those departing the Viacom-owned company are Paul DeBenedittis, executive vp multiplatform programming, content strategy and scheduling at MTV; Salli Frattini, senior vp/executive in charge of production at MTV; Kathy Flynn, senior vp production events at MTV and VH1; and Laura Nelson, senior vp communications at VH1.

MTV2 general manager David Cohn and MTV World general manager and senior vp Nusrat Durrani also are exiting their positions. However, it's unclear whether Cohn and Durrani will be taking on new roles within MTV Networks or moving on to another company.

VH1 Classic senior vp and general manager Eric Sherman also has exited his position.

It's understood that VH1 Classic and MTV2 will not be going off the air.

Meanwhile, MTV World consists of MTV Desi, which targets South Asian Americans; MTV Chi, targeting Chinese Americans; and MTV K, for Korean Americans. The company has decided to shut down the linear channels but hopes to continue the brands on other platforms.

"Unfortunately, the premium distribution model for MTV World proved more challenging than we anticipated in this competitive environment," the company said. "As a result, MTV has decided to shut down its linear MTV World operation. However, we remain steadfast in superserving multicultural youth, and we are continuing to investigate ways to integrate the MTV Desi, Chi and K brands online and on our other screens."

The staff reductions at MTV Networks are being made with an eye on consolidating functions at the company, which has long maintained a decentralized structure to keep its various brands -- including MTV, VH1 and Comedy Central -- in operation. The cuts, which are being made all week, represent about 6% of MTV Networks' global work force.

For me MTV and VH1 have been off the air since the early 90's, no reason to watch those channels.

Get an HDTV tuner and start watching THE TUBE.
