Is Mary J. Blige a modern day Tina Turner??

As I watched her DVD Live From Los Angles, her performance was so powerful and uplifting. When she first started out as an artist her vocals just plain sucked. But while I watched her rip through vocals and work that stage my mind said, "she reminds me of somebody". (no pun intended) As I kept watching Tina's name came to mind.

Am I wrong?? Give your opinions. No arguing here please, everybody has the right to their point of view.

Let me hear ya.

I don't see it and I definitely don't feel it.

Beyonce is at times reminiscent but never MJB.

Hell fuckin' naw! That bitch's music is weak and always has been. Tina made hard ass music. Mary J. Blige couldn't make hard music if she wanted to.

Maybe becoz of the way they deliever their testimony?

They have the same fiery "minister" approach whenever they per4m, for lack of a better expression.

Both are sure some gritty soul sirens nod

I'm sooooo sick of MJB's depressing ass songs about how somebody called her ugly, broke her heart, etc. Go get some professional help!! She's worse than MJ when it comes to all that "woe is me" mess.

She's beyond that "woe is me" phase. People are the ones who want to keep her there and make her talk about it.

Coz she seems faaaar from depressing to me nowadays shrug

Doesn't she have a new song talking about "no more drama" all over again?

OK, she's got a new song about how happy she is since there's "no more drama"?

No... not a good comparison... Tina's always had an energy and a positivity that seems kinda alien to MJB... Mary's too mellow and somber...
Change it one more time..

Thank you.....nod that's all she talks about, and even though she has been "happily" married for the past few years, i wonder why she is still singing about K-Ci on her "Breakthrough" album ("Enough Cryin'") hmmm her and K-Ci have been over for years, so why the need to rehash old stuff?
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

maybe so but what you don't understand is that when she tried to make a happier album people didn't like it. i don't see anything wrong with expressing yourself through pain and real life experiences.

I don't care how happy Mary is, there’s always a feeling of sadness or underlying struggle about her. Maybe it's something in her eyes.

All Tina has to do is walk on stage and the place gets lifted. She has a natural energy and a presence that most do not have.

Bizarre that people actually wanted her to continue to sing sad drama songs. Rather than just saying I don’t like the new material they chalked it up to they don’t like her happy. WTF? Maybe they felt like they couldn’t relate anymore but how long are you suppose to struggle and have drama in your life? Get help and move on. If Mary’s not singing about a bad relationship that you’re actually experiencing, change the record or the station.

FUCKING HELL NO!

no no no.

I can't believe the blasphemy of this thread lol

1. Tina sings on key
2. Tina can sell out soccer stadiums and arenas.
3. Tina has never been a coke whore
4. Tina was never just an urban artist (solo). Her catalog encompasses rock, pop, etc.
5. Tina is a fucking ICON around the GLOBE.
6. She can dance.
7. Her records use live instruments.
8. She's fucking...TINA TURNER. lol

Not to take anything away from Mary J...she's had a brilliant career on her own, staying power, a great run, is still on top of her game, especially in today's climate...but Tina she aint.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

And what's more impressive is that Tina's had a harder life then Mary has. Yet you don't get that depressive vibe from her. MJB is nowhere near being in Tina's league.

no actually i do understand. and when exactly was this so-called "happy" album? no there's nothing wrong with expressing yourself through your pain and real life experiences, but damn i don't want to hear you whine about your life for almost 15 years....when you go through pain, don't want to see and feel the sunshine at the end of the tunnel? well why not sing about that then. that's all i'm saying...

maybe this is why the last album i bought of hers was "mary"...
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

ACTUALLY U R wrong! BREAKTHROUGH is 2X platinum and since her MARY album from 99 her records sales have pretty much been equal or higher. 5x platinum for NO MORE DRAMA..released aug 28th, 2001.. her higest selling album to date.

I was not a fan of MARY's work till 99 Her enlightenment is a lesson so many people can learn from. She decided to not continue living for misery or the people thriving from her pain. She took her pain and turned it into power. Therefore jeopardizing her fame and succuss, I commnend her.. so people can say what they wanna say.. but AT THE END OF THE DAY.. she is just MARY.. TAKE HER AS SHE IS OR HAVING NOTHING..She is a motivator and an true example of a beautiful, intelligent black woman.

According to Andre Harrell, MJB was suppose to be a ghetto version of Anita Baker (Mary's teen idol).
