Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

http://www.youtube.com/wa...KW6SSkEM5o

I was just listening to Right Down the Line (which I like more) but couldn't find a video to that one. There was a house mix of this one in the early 90s that I remember hearing a few times when I went out dancing.

Windin' your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day
You'll drink the night away
And forget about everything
This city desert makes you feel so cold.
It's got so many people but it's got no soul
And it's taking you so long
To find out you were wrong
When you thought it had everything

You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin'
You're tryin' now
Another year and then you'll be happy
Just one more year and then you'll be happy
But you're cryin'
You're cryin' now

Way down the street there's a lad in his place
He opens the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything

He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down there's a quiet little town
And forget about everything

But you know he'll always keep movin'
You know he's never gonna stop movin
Cus he's rollin'
He's the rollin' stone

And when you wake up it's a new mornin'
The sun is shinin' it's a new morning
You're goin'
You're goin' home.

PS - have there been two threads a year on this song? razz

If you have never heard the Foo Fighters cover version of this song, you should definately check it out.

86 the sax and throw in some killer guitars, plus Dave has some mild lyric modifications.

Hear it here.....

Excellent cover and one of my favorites.

I always had mixed feelings on this one --loved the lyrics, and Rafferty's delivery, loved the quiet, Steely Dan-ish intro, but it always bothered me when that sax would burst in....don't know why, but that sax always got on my nerves for some reason.....

Loved this song since it was first a hit but
I've always felt it was too short & there should be a third verse.
But will always love it & have not gotten sick of it in all the years.
And its not like it reminds of that time or some person or event - it is just a great timeless pop song.

You guys should really check out the Cover Version done by RICK SPRINGFIELD (yeah rick!) on his 2005 Covers cd "The Day After Yesterday" (songs i wish i had written) its a truly amazing choice of songs to cover, and his version is true to the original which all covers should be.

I've never been big on that sax solo either but I've come to accept it as one of the signature pieces of that song. lol I actually really like the guitar part that brings out of the sax part near the end.

I know exactly what u mean, pali. I do and always have liked this song. I still have the 45 from when I was little. Pali, your description of this song is on point, even about the sax. I think it's mixed waaay to high up in the song so it has a harsh, overbearing quality to it. Which actually clashes with the rest of the song's mood. But this song is soooo California in the late 70's it's not even funny.

Hey rip, were u also going as Tommy Ross? I ask this cuz one; I noticed u had posted on a KISS thread mentioning how u knew I dug Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over albums. I was like "How did he know that?" And 2, I hadn't seen u around and had wondered where u were. I thought Tommy Ross was cool. Cool as name from an all time fave movie of mine. So I just put two and 2 together. Are u Tommy?

Yeah, I thought I told you I was lol I ditched it cuz it only confused people. Now, in ditching it, I have confused even more people. Tommy was cool. He shoulda knocked Chris and Billy Nolan the fuck out...then he wouldn't be dead.

Why must you read my mind all the time? omg

This song pretty much defines me. lol It brings back wonderful memories of dancing around in the grass in the backyard while my dad built stuff in the garage. cloud9 I still listen to it a lot.

I also love "Right Down the Line" by him as well. nod

Yeah, I did get that feeling-- even though Rafferty was in London, it's got that same feel as groups like The Eagles...sounds like a Southern California kinda thing....

Yep. Did u know that Amy Irving and William Katt used to date long before the casting of the movie? I know exactly where some of the shots filmed at the school is located. All of the female locker scenes were filmed at Redondo Union High School which I attended my freshman and sophmore year in Redondo Beach. The indoor gym scenes were shot at a local jr. high school in Hermosa Beach, which is right next door to Redondo. The outside gym scenes and the prom scenes, track scenes, were shot in the valley.
