Lynard Skynard :Southern Heroes or Racists? Your opinion is needed here.

I was watching TV the other day and I couldn't help but hear that the song "Sweet Home Alabama",by Lynard Skynard was written by the band's frontman, Ronnie Vanzant in response to the song written by Neil Young titled "Southern Man". When I was little I used to listen to the song Southern Man (it was on a documentary of Martin Luther King Jr.) because it was written depicting the accounts of violence and racism in the south. It told of what happened at a freedom march that suddenly got out of hand and gave imagery of blacks being beat and mistreated at the march on "Bloody Sunday" when Martin Luther King held the march in Selma.
All I want to ask is why Lynard Skynard is held up as being so great when to me they are racist. The song Neil Young wrote wasn't to degrade southerners or people from Alabama, it depicted what really went on on that Sunday when a lot of Blacks lost their lives and were injured for a freedom march!
What makes me even more upset is you have people like Kid Rock jumping on stage and singing Sweet Home Alabama like a hillbilly redneck and then the next minute he is lick Run DMC's booty! which I find if he was educated on the origin of the song "Sweet Home Alabama" he would feel like a stupid idiot!
I'm not saying Sweet Home Alabama itself is a song about hatred or racism in itself, but the reason why it was written was to say " Who cares about blacks being beaten here and lynched, this is where I was born and raised and it is great to me!"

I mean really can someone educated on this matter help me out? Please don't post your opinion unless you thoroughly understand what this topic is about. Can someone help me by posting what you think of this as it has bothered me for a long time and has made me question does America think Lynard Skynard are heroes? If they do, we are in worst shape than I thought. this is also meant to educate those of you who think highly of them to let you know to me they are BiGot racist!

Essence

I'm not overly familiar with them (bar plane crashes etc) but I saw a TV performance of them flaunting their confederate flag draped all over the stage...

In short I'd wager they're southern heroes to many yet undoubtedly racists. So both.

Well, when you depict what really went on, there are some that don't like it anyway.

Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don't need him around anyhow
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
