I myself prefer the narrow understanding of the term which denotes rhythm and blues tracks from the late 1940s and 1950s. I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

John Lee Hooker would be included as well in that case. LOVE ♪♫♪♫ ♣¤═══¤۩۞۩ஜ۩ஜ۩۞۩¤═══¤♣

If there is an unofficial "King of Black Contemporary Popular Music" -- for those playing too tight with the definition of "R&B" -- here are the true contenders for the throne, IMO:
Marvin Gaye Stevie Wonder Ray Charles Sam Cooke James Brown Smokey Robinson [Edited 1/21/07 17:43pm] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. Well, if you go by the R&B charts you're looking at James Brown or R.Kelly. I could be wrong, don't feel like researching that right now. Any takers...Beuller? Beuller? I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

in the words of whitney HELL NO! He had some awesome songs in the 80's but that doesn't make him the king of anything, he was just a fad and both of them know it
I think people who deserve the title are: Michael Jackson Prince Stevie Wonder Marvin Gaye Luther Vandross R.Kelly but then again I think titles are dumb and everyone has a unique talent that speaks for itself.
