Is George Clinton worth getting into?

His appearance scares me somewhat.

What's the closest Prince song you could akin to George Clinton's music?

I'm actually not super well-versed with George Clinton's solo career, but as for P-funk, hell YES they're worth getting into. There were few bands that had a greater influence on prince, hip-hop, modern R&B, and funk-rock than the vast ever morphing amoeba that was P-funk. If you don't have any of them I'd recommend

Parliament: The Mothership Connection, Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome, The Motor Booty Affair

Funkadelic: Maggot Brain, Standing on the verge of getting it on, free your mind and your ass will follow, one nation under a groove

Bootsy's Rubber Band: Stretchin out, Ahh the name is bootsy baby, Live in Louisville

As a solo, get all of his capitol recordings...

His paisley park stuff is hit or miss.

i agree that this thread title is stupid. Any GC titles are worht listening to. The capitol stuff and paisley park. Even the sony album he did. If the entire album isn't good there are always at least 2 or 3 gems. George Clinton is second only to JB when it comes to funk. But unlike JB his current material still holds up.

Not sure if you consider yourself a FUNK fan. Parliament's intergalactic themes and outlandish attire were groundbreaking. Keep in mind, George has been at this for a long while, so his appearance is that of a unconventional 60 plus year old. Prince said he went home and wrote Erotic City after seeing George and Parliament one day. i forget what song in particular he said inspired it. A couple of classic "singles" would be Flashlight, Knee Deep, One Nation Under a Groove, and from his solo work, Atomic Dog

George's solo material is rubbish compared to the brilliant stuff he made with Parliament.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Definitely get his solo stuff last, after you get some Parliament for funk and some Funkedelic for rock.

He's actually pretty different from Prince on the whole, they just have certain similarities.

We Can Funk (done with Clinton), New Power Soul (the whole album, practically), are kind of similar to Parliament. Also maybe Scarlet Pussy, Rock Hard in a Funky Place, Jam of the Year, Sacrifice but they're still different

I can't really think of Prince songs similar to Funkadelic. They're more like Jimi Hendrix, though Knee Deep (a Funkadelic song which more like Parliament) is kind of similar to Billy Jack Bitch

I think he's talking about the animal, alliterating, and most of all being gross. He should have said "is a pig's peeing pussy pork?" to make it "perfect!"

Yes matty, he is worth getting into.

George's legacy is oceanic and somewhat unwieldy, but hugely influential and incredible.

What makes George all the more satisfying is that he still releases new, contemporary music. 'How Late Do U Have 2 B B4 UR Absent' is his latest Funk opus with solo tracks, Funkadelic and Parliament songs and other associated Artists.

George's 2 most legendary bands are Funkadelic and Parliament. Funkadelic made some of the best Funk guitar music, ever. Check out 'Maggot Brain', 'Cosmic Slop' etc. Parliament made some of the greatest pure funk jams ever.

Later incarnations of Funkadelic from 'One Nation Under a Groove' onwards mixed both Funkadelic and Parliament trademark sounds. Now George sounds like a funky mess of everything. He even experiments with Techno-DooWop' on his latest album.

To sample George both vintage and current for FREE check out the links listed below. There are 4 free, hour long radio shows on there I think you'll be impressed with.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and 'Erotic City' is the most George Clinton inspired, P-Funk song Prince ever made.

When discussing Clinton's influence on Prince you must go beyond what Prince songs sound directly and consider how much Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic exploits helped creatively liberate Prince and open him up to a much broader universe of concepts and experimentation than he otherwise might have attempted. Plus, Clinton's P-Funk empire may have inspired Prince to emulate his business/music approach as evidenced by The Time, Vanity6, Sheila E., etc. Finally, Clinton's songs have been among those most often covered live by Prince, including (Not Just) Knee Deep, One Nation, Flashlight, Tear the Roof (Off Tha Sucka), etc. Plus, one of Prince's most bad-ass, kick-ass unreleased funk slamdowns is Cookie Jar, which was originally recorded by P-Funk's Fuzzy Haskins and later recorded and released by Parlet.

Btw, to reply to the title of this thread ... my answer is: Is clean air worth breathing? GC and his assorted acts are pure oxygen to anyone with even a shred of rhythm in their soul.

Peace,
Scott

Sorry, but the idea that you aren't familiar with Parliament, Funkadelic, solo George, and/or the countless number of songs that sample his music is a little unbelievable to me. I just envision a complicated series of coincidences that kept the two of you apart... lol

In short, the answer is "hell yes."
