Is Carlos Santana worth getting into?

Yes or no?

Yes. But personally, I can only listen as far as 1977 or so.

Try 'Santana' (the lion's head cover) and 'Abraxas'.
All the tracks missmad recommended are on these albums.

I think 'Caravanserai' is Santana's best album, but it's a bit of a slow grower. 'Abraxas' will get you hooked first. smile

I have to be in the right mood for Santana, but there is no question they were phenomenal. My father was a HUGE Santana fan when I was a kid, and he had everything they did on vinyl. I think I still have most of them.

My faves:

Abraxas (of course)
Amigos
Welcome

I've always liked Marathon, although that's probably not high on the list for most Santana fans. It has some great latin-flavored pop/rock. "Lightning in the Sky" in particular is a very cool song.

Basically, like with Stevie Wonder, try anything from the seventies, and it should be good, as long as you like rock mixed with elements of latin, blues, jazz and funk music, to varying degrees.

Carlos is good, but as a guitarist he is somewhat overrated IMO. Mostly pentatonics and aeolian modes...

I don't know which album it's from as I only have it on a best of, but look out for "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile). The most amazing guitar instrumental I know.

I dig his tone, but I don't like the way he plays, at least on a lot of the stuff he's been doing lately. On all those tracks he's done with Rob Thomas, Michelle Branch, et al, he plays really badly actually.

I think his best stuff is the stuff he did in the 70's when he was pretending to be Miles Davis.

Wow! Can't say I've seen it put in quite those terms. Nor can I say I disgree with the analysis, except to say it seemed more like he was trying to emulate Trane...

Maybe more like Trane's vibe with Miles' sound. Some of those albums he put out sound like a dead cop of Bitches' Brew. confused

Can't blame a guy for trying, but those fake-jazz albums, are unfortunately, unlistenable. Carlos must have realized it because he went back to his pop-rock formula.

'Aqua Marine' is a pretty beautiful instrumental by Santana as well, very atmospheric and mysterious.

Agreed. There are times when his guitar playing is indeed beautiful, some recent examples being the instrumentals, 'El Farol' and Sunlight On Water', but often his solos sound too much alike on album after album and there is not much to look forward to in terms of different solos in his playing sounds.

Harlepolis

He got the GROOVIEST album covers ever. I wonder if he had anything to do with making those albums' illustrations, or the process of their art direction.

Anybody know?
