FUNKADELIC Historians.. I currently own "Standing On The Verge", "One Nation Under A Groove", "Uncle Jam Wants You", "Funkadelic", "Free Your Mind", "Maggot Brain" and the "Live-1971" CD. I recently bought the AMERICA EATS ITS YOUNG and I notice that the rock element was GREATLY decreased. Strings and horns took its place. The question is, WHY? What happened to Eddie Hazel on this album? There are some great songs on the album such as "I Call My Baby..", "Hit the Nail On the Head", "Miss Lucifer's Lave" but I miss the up front and in your face ROCK sound that I come to love with the prior Funkadelic releases. This album was a jolt for me. Where's my rock and guitar. Where's Eddie.
What was going on with Funkadelic on this album?

I think the evolution of the group is what marked the differences in sound...let's just say they were experimenting.
I think it is one of their finer albums (ok, maybe not compared to the PHONK that followed). They never got away from the true formula of their beginnings, but broadened their horizons as time went by... They will ALWAYS be one of my faves...after P of course. Be sure to pick up Cosmic Slop...you won't be disappointed. [Edited 1/19/07 18:56pm]

"America Eats It's Young" still rocks in my opinion (even tho' there's not a lot of heavy guitar on it). It's the songs and concept of the LP that hits me. I'm surprised "America" hasn't been turned into a broadway show. The songs really sound like they belong in a musical.

It was the personnel shift. Eddie Hazel and Billy 'Bass' Nelson, the core of the early psychedlic rock/soul sound, left Funkadelic over money disputes, and guitarist Tawl Ross was on the sidelines after a bad acid trip. At this point George dedcided to go in a slightly different direction with the Funkadelic sound, and brought in the Collins brothers, William ('Bootsy') and Phelps ('Catfish'). He also brought in guitarist/ vocalist Garry Shider, and this all made a difference in the sound. But Bootsy and catfish left right after America Eats its Young, only to return later as part of the core of the new version of Parliament (and a Young Mike Hampton stepped in to take over Hazel's place as the Funkadelic guitar juggernaut (though Hazel woud return on and off in the coming years). From then on, the more funky, soulful music (with the Horns) would generally be under the Parliament name, and the rock-funk oriented material would be back under Funkadelic... ... [Edited 1/20/07 9:13am] OK cool..so "Cosmic Slop" and "Hardocre Jollies" return back to the hard rock/funk blend? I just want to say that I dont HATE the AMERICA EATS ITS YOUNG album. It just caught me off guard. Additional singers were brought in and it seemed like the rock element was decreased a lot while harmonious singing, horns and strings were brought in. The songwriting is still at its best. I love "If You Dont Like The Effects Dont Produce The Cause"

What was going on with Funkadelic on this album? A couple of things happen at the time of AEIY. First off this is the first of Bootsy's involvement, but it's much more minimal compared to Bernie's development as an arranger of other musical elements. Eddie was on the outs with George.(Billy too I think). Eddie is briefly back on SOTV. test

You mean something from the archives or a reunion?
The former is a very remote possibility, but it really depends on what you call the original lineup. There are the Sugar Shack tapes from eary70s, but they are not great recordings in terms of audio quality. Maybe some remastering touh-ups can fix it up Technically, the latter is a total impossiblity since all orignal Funkadelics except Billy Nelson have passed. What fill-ins would be acceptable? test
