LAWD...Why have I slept on JOHN MAYER

I recently bought the CD "Try" by the John Mayer Trio and I was PLEASANTLY surprised that the CD is EXCELLENT!

John is an excellent guitarist...and we all know that Pino Palladino is a bass guitar legend.

I wonder why he rarely gets love on this site...

anyone feeling the JOHN MAYER TRIO?

Yea I used to not like him. Not s huge fan of his voice, or lack of, but hes got alot of cool jazzy tunes and plays pretty well. I'm a huge Steve Jordan fan from back to the SNL band days, so he must see something in John too.

His voice is pretty lame but the guy is probably one of the more genuinely talented artists in the mainstream today, so he's okay by me.

He has improved a lot vocally (certainly not his greatest talent). Really, a lot. He sounds great on Continuum and Try.

It's okay, technically. It's more the tone that annoys me. He loves the drawl. I don't lol

I think a lot of people dismissed him with Room for Squares and haven't really listened since, because it was so pop. I still think there were great songs on that album, but it wasn't mature, and it wasn't COOL. smile

I try to tell people, imagine if you had judged Prince only based on his hit singles over any given 5 year period. I only became a rabid Prince fan when I started getting into his unreleased/live stuff. Same with Mayer. Though with each album he gets closer to that kind of authenticity in the studio. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Actually there have been a lot of positive threads about JM in the past few months.

Great album! Continuum is my album of the year. His song writing skills are incredible. Room for Squares has some great songs on that album other than the radio hits. I tell you this "Belief" is probably the song of the year that most people have never heard.
1 over Jordan...the greatest since

I kinda want to like him, seems like a nice guy, but not a one of those singles has interested me, especially that blatant "People Get Ready" ripoff he just released. Are the singles representative of his sound, or does he get into different kinds of territory?

I thought he sampled "We're a Winner" and not "People Get Ready?"

if I were you, I would look into the JOHN MAYER TRIO album first.....

here's a link to it...

http://www.cduniverse.com...5760&BAB=E

you can listen to some of the clips

he remakes Ray Charles' I GOT A WOMAN
and Jimi Hendrix's WAIT TILL TOMORROW...

I love this album!

he can REALLY play the guitar

I think his guitar playing sounds like the stuff you get on the free guitar lesson CDs that are bundled with guitar magazines like Total Guitar or Guitar One.

Pretty sure there are no actual samples, but the chord progression and production sound a lot like "people get ready" to me. And for a guy so into "roots," he doesn't bother to give Mayfield any songwriting credit...

Oh, come on, it's a VERY different song. I hear the similarity in some ways, but. . . songwriting credit?

I don't think they're particularly representative. His albums are fairly coherent, so he doesn't go to all corners of the Earth on each one, but the single choices don't really highlight his best work, imho.

Maybe you were waiting on the world to change? lol

Seriously. I never cared much for his voice, either. I think he has learned a lot from having David Ryan Harris in his group. He's a much, much better singer than John and plays a mean axe as well.

.

his last 2 records are better than tons of the crap that's been released throughout this decade.

i, also, seriously enjoy watching his recent interviews just 4 the fact that he is trying so BADLY 2 break outta the "cute" image he's earned eversince "Wonderland" by tellin' all the smart jokes and addressin' his audiance as "kids" and stuff falloff

that and the fact that he called his 2 1st LP's crap falloff

gotta admire the boy nevertheless nod

I think he has always leaned towards being a smartassed bitch in interviews. I think now he's just less concerned about pissing off his record company 'cause he's established. lol

He is pretty dismissive of his early music. Which is almost too bad, but. . .well. . . his recent stuff is better.

Do you think that's true? I don't know enough to compare two players who are both really good.

Technically, I watch both of them with awe at times, but I don't play guitar, so. . . shrug

Musically, I would say that I find Mayer's playing to be less visceral, but more engaging, and sometimes more expressive.

People always compare everyone to Prince here. I would say he plays a very good guitar and leave it at that.

Well, sure, fine, but. . . I take the comparison as an opportunity to learn. It's not about putting either of them down.

I was saying I think he's MORE of a bitch to his label now. In the beginning, I think he was trying/struggling to maintain his sort of sweet pretty-boy imagine in interviews and such, probably to stay out of hot water with his label, because he really can be kind of abrasive. But lately, I think he's a lot less concerned about what his label thinks, and I've heard him say things in public that. . . uh. . . don't fit the sweetheart image. lol
