Cool tune! I sure hope the eagerly-awaited album is released sometime this year, though. Wasn't the new album supposed to be released in 2005?

Don't tell me he's one of the producers for this project! sad

I read here that he was head or CEO or something of Sanctuary Urban (? or something like that) which had the rights to release this album. I think it was all set to be released a year after his death and then I don't know what the hell happened! Might have been right after his death...not sure but he fucked things up and the label is doing really shitty, even for an indie from what I heard. I don't know that he is still involved but it seems like a conflict of interest since he already runs World Music or whatever...

I can't hear the song because of all the blocks on these computers at work. However, from the responses I'm reading from people, I'm sure it probably sounds like shit.

I'm assuming the new album will probably be similar to Rick's last album "Urban Rapsody". There might possibly be a nice slow jam or two on the new album but I doubt there will be any funk....which is very damn disappointing. And by the way, funk is NOT a stripped down midtempo song with shit hop sounding drum machines.....if that's what happens to be on the new album.

Posthumous Rick James Album Due This Spring
Rick James

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
The album Rick James was working on before his 2004 death will be released in early May, the artist's business manager, Ron Kramer, tells Billboard.com. The as-yet-untitled set features tracks James wrote in the last two or three years of his life; it will be released by Stone City Records.

"This is one he really wanted out," Kramer says of the project, which was originally due in August 2005 via Sanctuary. "He really didn't want anybody else on these songs. He wanted to prove himself again. He wanted people to enjoy him; his music."

The album's first single, "Deeper Still," will hit urban radio in late January. A 30-second snippet of the cut, which features longtime collaborator Danny LeMelle, can be heard on James' Web site. Kramer adds that there is more unreleased James music in the vault, and that he is interested in working with Universal to compile deluxe editions of the artist's back catalog.

In addition, "Memoirs of a Superfreak," an autobiography James wrote while incarcerated at Folsom Prison from 1993-1995, will be released in April via Amber Communications.

James' estate has also given the go-ahead to screenwriter Sheldon Turner ("The Longest Yard") to begin work on a film about James' life. Contrary to early reports, Dave Chappelle, who famously parodied James on his "Chappelle's Show," will not be involved in the movie.

"When Rick was alive, Dave Chappelle wanted to make a movie," Kramer says. "But Rick didn't want a movie made of the caricature of himself from Dave's show. He wanted a real story."

James died Aug. 6, 2004, of a heart attack. The artist, who had battled drug addiction for years and suffered a 1998 stroke, had methamphetamine, cocaine, Vicodin and Xanax in his system at the time of death, according to the autopsy report.

I understand where you coming form brotha. People just ain't funky no more.
Nevertheless it is a nice mid tempo jam. I am hoping the barkays new cd
house party that comes out next month isn't a reflection of what you are talking about and that they return to their funk roots of the early 70's and 80's but you know these older artists tend to incorporate some kind of the
current contemporary crap into their sound.

One thing I admired about The Barkays, is that they continued on with funk in the 1990s with their single "Put A Little Nasty On It" around 1993 or so and they also had a little funk on their "48 Hours" album around 1996.

Their last album they made in the early 2000s had absolutely NO funk whatsoever on it, it had a shit hop sound, and nothing on the entire album got past midtempo. I listened to samples of each and every song on the Tower Records website and I left the album sitting on the shelves in the record store to collect dust. If they continue that on their upcoming album, I will leave that one in the record store also. If they can't make good music, not only do they need to not have any sales, but they need to actually lose money making it.

Actually, I would prefer to see my favorite artists retire from recording with some dignity than to sellout and ruin their good names.

I agree,it's a shame how so many funk artists and bands watered down their music in the late 80s/early 90s.I still have nightmares of a Gap Band CD I bought in 1999.It's titled 'Funkin Til 2000 Comes' and it is dreadful. It's got that lazy,West Coast, midtempo, gangsta rap sound.Snoop even appears on a few tracks! Needless to say,I got rid of this CD.

yeah, this new song ("Deeperstill") has the same lazy,midtempo,smoothed-out R&B/hip-hop sound that we heard on 'Urban Rapsody'.But yet,it still has that "classic Rick James sound",especially the vocals.I'm hopeful that the new CD will have a few gems on it.
