White Town :: Your Woman (1997) Just tell me what you've got to say to me, I've been waiting for so long to hear the truth, It comes as no surprise at all you see, So cut the crap and tell me that we're through. Now I know your heart, I know your mind, You don't even know you're being unkind, So much for all your highbrow Marxist ways, Just use me up and then you walk away, Boy you can't play me that way. Well I guess what you say is true, I could never be the right kind of girl for you, I could never be your woman. When I saw my best friend yesterday, She said she never liked you from the start, Well me, I wish that I could claim the same, But you always knew you held my heart. And you're such a charming handsome man, Now I think I finally understand, Is it in your genes?, I don't know, But I'll soon find out, that's for sure, Why did you play me this way?. Well I guess what you say is true, I could never be the right kind of girl for you, I could never be your woman. Well I guess what they say is true, I could never spend my life with a man like you, I could never be your woman.

I had this CD. "Your Woman" was the only song on it that I liked, though.

Used to come on at 1 a.m. It was MTV's way of trying to lay claim to whole "Electronica is the next-big-thing" buzz that was going on in 1997. They used to play a lot of really underground European videos like Aphex Twin, Robert Miles "Children," Daft Punk, Prodigy. It was actually a really cool show. This video and song makes me think of that time.

This was a great song. For some reason, I always think of it whenever I think of Laid Back's White Horse.

I seem to recall hearing or reading that White Town was actually just one guy who basically just made music in his apartment, or something like that... "Your Woman" does have a very retro, almost home-made vibe to it. Very cool track.

I can feel that. You know, this song is the most '80s song to come out of the '90s, if that makes any sense. Synths were really not something people used to make music at a certain point, so this track just stood out at the time.

When coming up with playlists for my net radio, it's been hard for me to find stuff from the 90's that was "new wave-esque" to play. It's tons of 80's stuff, tons of stuff from the 2000's, and a huge gap in the 90s, heh.

Ya, it does have a DIY vibe, I do feel that. I think it's so bombastic for this dude in dress to sing like a woman. I wonder if it was the guy who sang the song that appeared in the video or was that an actrissss? lol

Hey, I remember that song! It was quite popular back in tha day, when I was 15 .... has it been 10 years since this was released... holy shit!
I do appreciate this song a bit more today than I did back then.. At the time I thought the song and video were "gay", especially the thing about a guy singing "I could never be the right kind of girl for you"... But since then, my music taste has expanded a bit. I still remember that weird video being played on the Top20 countdown on TV: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BoAS1cvQzwI Btw, thanx to the OP for reminding me about this song

Yeah, the '90s really was a weird time for synthpop/newwave lovers and for me because I was craving it at that time. It just dropped out of sight for a few years and really didn't pick up until a year or so after this video. Les Rythmes Digitales hit with Darkdancer, but that wouldn't come until '99. Have you heard that album?

I like it when men bend the rules in songs. It's just fascinating to me contextually. Kind of in the same way folks like falsettos.
