And for a guy so into "roots," he doesn't bother to give Mayfield any songwriting credit... Oh, come on, it's a VERY different song. I hear the similarity in some ways, but. . . songwriting credit? I think he was more influenced by the Vaughn Bros ripoff of "People Get Ready" called "Tick TOck People" back in 1990 or so. Hes a huge Stevie V fan and stole the ide for the song from them probably. ______________________________________________

Technically, I watch both of them with awe at times, but I don't play guitar, so. . . Musically, I would say that I find Mayer's playing to be less visceral, but more engaging, and sometimes more expressive. People always compare everyone to Prince here. I would say he plays a very good guitar and leave it at that. this is PRINCE.ORG not some other blog site. Of course we're going to compare everything to Prince on this site! ______________________________________________

I like it--not enough power on it, though, in the vocal. But I'd do him [Edited 1/20/07 17:55pm]

VoicesCarry said: His voice is pretty lame but the guy is probably one of the more genuinely talented artists in the mainstream today, so he's okay by me. His voice sounds like a weaker version of Dave Matthews. He sings some songs better then others. He should improve even more if he has a good vocal coach.

I met Mayer at a restaurant/bar called Olives on park avenue here in the city, he's a cool cat, He asked me what i thought about his sound and Continnum, from a producer/engineer creative side,
and i was blunt with him" Mayer, you sound like you stole a time machine and traveled to Hawaii 1999 and stole Jack Johnsons sound, came back, added it to a blender, mixed it with funk guitar rhythms and dog shit and came out with continnum" he replied "fuckin rad man, how'd you know bout my time machine?" he's a great guy, think he's a horrible song writer, but fuck, he's wacky i dig him I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

I read all the replies and its interesting how people put more emphasis on his voice/singing more than on his songwriting/playing...

HereToRockYourWorld said: LoveAlive said: I wonder why he rarely gets love on this site... I think a lot of people dismissed him with Room for Squares and haven't really listened since, because it was so pop. I still think there were great songs on that album, but it wasn't mature, and it wasn't COOL. ONe of my friends here in Atlanta has been a Mayer fan since he was playing around here and she was telling me the other day that Columbia made Room For Squares a LOT poppier than the original version of the album that was released on Aware. Columbia was fucking with John for awhile about his music. I heard they maDE him re-record parts of "Heavier Things" because they were too jazz/blues.

I play "Why Georgia" about 15 times a day on my Napster.
I think Mayer is a Dave Matthews clone but he is currently doing Dave better than Dave is. [Edited 1/21/07 13:02pm] All good things they say never last...
