i hope he does something dark with this one, maybe a little aggro with really indignant lyrics. you know, kind of like he did on the pretty fragile spiral machine album.

New NIN Album Looks To The Future

February 14, 2007

Trent Reznor

We reported yesterday that Nine Inch Nails revealed the tracklist for the upcoming album, Year Zero, on the Web site yearzero.nin.com, and it will have 16 songs. The record is due in stores on April 17, and it will be the first of two concept albums. The second one will likely be released in 2008.

In a statement, NIN mastermind Trent Reznor says that the concept for Year Zero began as an experiment with noise on a laptop, which led him to daydream about the end of the world. "I believe sometimes you have a choice in what inspiration you choose to follow and other times you really don't. This record is the latter," explains Reznor. "Once I tuned into it, everything fell into place. With a framework established, the songs were very easy to write. Things started happening in my real life that blurred the lines of what was fiction and what wasn't. The record turned out to be more than just a record in scale, as you will see over time."

He explained the concept further, saying, "It takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point - politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth."

Reznor also said that the music is more of a "sound collage" than his recent efforts, and that a lot of it was improvised. The first single from Year Zero, "Survivalism," will arrive at radio on February 27 with an add date of March 6.
