BIG fan here....

A great voice, but she didn`t always get the best material.
Have you seen "Sparkle"? I watched it for the first time yesterday, she looked amazing.

The 1st time I ever saw her it was in Alex Haley's "Roots - The Next Generation".

She was all the rage back then, along with Lola Falana.

Ottensen

On a daytime variety show special here in Germany over the New Year's holiday: it was a show deicated to 'One Hit Wonders' (apparently they only know her Flashdannce stuff here and not Fame). They came out, lip synched, had a short interview afterwards. She was still adorable, but obviously older, and a little 'padded' as happens with age. She had a kinda 'Auntie Irene' vibe about her with the extra thickness, and well, because she was dressed in a 'church suit'. and I know there are those of you out there who know of what I speak: those two piece suits with the beading that you buy at the flea market so you can wear it for the church concert, except hers had a split up the side and she was serving much leg lol. Se was a real cutie. The only issue I took was with the fact that she pulled her hair back into a ponytail and added a 'piece' to it, but they didn't put enough grease/hair spray on the sides to keep the little hairs from popping out and her kitchens on her neck weren't in place. Beyond those little colored woman aesthetic details, Aunt Irene was tearing it up! She was FEELIN' that song, even though she was lip-syching but still! Everyone lip syched to a track on that show.

She had alot of promise as a singer/actress but unfortunately, her career fizzled out after 1985 or so.She got into drugs really heavily. With stronger material and a more aggressive manager, she could have been the Donna Summer of the 80s.

I didn`t know that, what a waste...
Yeah, she certainly had the talent AND the looks nod
I liked her in "Fame", too bad she didn`t star in the series.
You know, i`ve NEVER seen an episode of "Fame", what did you think of it?
It`s cool that Leroy was in the series though...

I think so too if she had continued with more songs like "Fame" instead of "What A Feeling".

I thought the series was much better than the movie. Especially the episode where Leroy got robbed in a bar of everything except for his underwear briefs. If I had a VCR back then, I would have been reaching for the pause button. They need to release the episode on DVD so I can zoom in close too. lol

The last single I remember hearing from her was "The Dream (Theme from D.C. Cab)" in early 1984.I think she also appears in that movie. After that,I never heard anything from her again. She co-wrote the 1988 Brothers Johnson hit "Kick It To The Curb".She later had a serious cocaine problem.

Damn, I don't remembe The Brothers Johnson having anything out in the late 80s. I guess it got buried in all the adult contemporary shit on the radio at the time. lol
