I was going to start a thread praising this man. The fact that he didnt get enough votes 3 years in a row and missed the RNR hall of fame, clearly shows the flaws of that system, the fact that Percy Sledge got in no problem while John didnt get enough votes is criminal. Mellencamp to me is Dylan, people make think thats crazy but looking at it by generation it isnt. Mellencamp obviously influenced by Dylan,Woody Guthrie and other folk/blues greats has continually put out solid album after solid album, his latest will be out on Jan 23rd on HIP-O label, since John left Sony back in 2003 after 5 years. To me Mellencamp belongs on a small label, though i think Lost Highway would best suit him i dont think he really cares at this point. Not only that Mellencamp has constantly worked with some great players and background singers, I think 1994's HUMAN WHEELS was his ulitmate statement, though he never has let me down. Check out 2001's CUTTIN HEADS and the title track, where Chuck D's rap is the best thing Chuck D has done since Fight the Power. Mellencamps 2003 blues/folk covers cd was overlooked big time, mainly because of the song "To washington" and Mellencamps Anti-war statement, many stores "dixie chicked" Mellencamp by not stocking it at all.
