No, no! Get Dummy first! It's their first and best album. The live set is very good, too but Dummy is a masterpiece. One of my faves from that decade.

You can skip the Sour Times EP if you see it. It's just some not-really remixes.
I suggest you get them in order of release and, actually, get the DVD of the live show instead: it has the same live show as the cd (IT IS COOL TO SEE THEM PERFORM), plus some of their music videos too.

I'd start with Dummy too.....but I've grown to like their self titled one more. They only have three albums.....four if you include the bootleg of remixes....so I'd just get all of their albums. I wish they'd hurry up with another album. I've been hearing for years that they were working on another album. Portishead is in my top 5 of favorite artists of all time. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

I'm still dying to hear "Western Eyes" & "Biscuit" live. They should've included more songs on their live album . I like "Half Past Closing", but I really wished it would've been replaced with "Western Eyes" or "Biscuit" don't ever fall in love again....it's all over now How cheery looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

The second one is definitely a grower. For me it became my instant favorite.....could be because I had worn "Dummy" out before getting the chance to hear their self titled one. I swear "Humming" has one of the best intros ever. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

I think there is only one song of theirs that I know, but I love it. Can´t even remember its name... "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Portishead is 3rd only to Prince and Sade for babymaking music.
I like the live DVD alot just b/c of how my surround sound works well with it, but there wasn't much diversion from the studio tracks other than Sour Times when it came down to it.

They remind me of winter. I have to listen to them in dark, cold, depressing wintertime in fact. Like right now I guess. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven
