see, in twenty years we'll all be slapping our foreheads and wondering how we were so blind to the musical innovations of nickelback. it was all right there, all along. brian eno will die sad and lonely because of them. not today, but eventually. mark my words lightly. look how long it took the rockist intelligensia to catch on to bowie's low album! i'm telling you, a hard rain is gonna fall - and it's going to be a rain of mullets and jesus goatees.

I'm not bragging! I was just admitting something. I'm not particularly proud of it. I need HELP!!!!! Someone needs to sit me down and show me how to enjoy Tim McGraw and Jay-Z.

Oh, and also to enjoy their music. rainbow

i think there's good country and crap country/good hip hop and bad hip hop, just like there's good and crap with every genre of music.

of course, "good" and "crap" are relative to the listener's taste. but speaking from my own tastes, it's really sad to know people who'll never give great music like johnny cash or public enemy a chance because "ALL country and ALL rap is horrible". rolleyes

there's good shit in every musical genre. it's just a matter of enjoying music enough to be open to it all.

I didn't say ALL country and ALL rap is horrible... I just said I don't care for it. That doesn't mean it's horrible at all. It just doesn't appeal to me personally.

I guess I should say "modern country". I do like Johnny Cash. And I like some country-ish stuff, Lucinda Williams and The Eagles for instance. I just don't like the Garth Brooks/Tim McGraw/Toby Keith kinda stuff they play on country radio.

Doesn't mean I'm dissing it - it's just not my bag. wink

Does being a Prince fan fall under "irony", or is it hipster-worthy? sad

I have my street cred to consider.....

Perhaps digging SOTT is ultra-cool, but jamming to Rave is irony?

I'm disappointed in all of you...there is not one use of quotations as being indicative of the so called "irony" anywhere in this post biggrin

i don't even think of most 'modern' country as country. it just sounds like lite rock/adult contemporary with slightly froggier sounding vocals and people who wear cowboy hats and fringed sleeves. if i don't get an instant sense-memory flashback of my grandpa's nicotene-stenched pickup truck when i hear a country song, then it's not country music to me. lol

i DO know people who just hate entire genres wholesale, and i find that incredibly silly. what if someone comes along and knocks that genre on its ear with something new and completely interesting, but people miss it because "ALL _____ sucks", etc. what's the currency in writing off an entire musical genre? what's the value in it? that's my whole deal. it just irks me.

LOL. That reminds me of a review I read once of The Wallflowers covering Bowie's "Heroes" (Bowie's original title is in quotes.)

The reviewer said something to the effect that the Wallflowers take on the song was so earnest that it completely missed the irony implicit in Bowie's quotes in the title.

lol Isn't irony ironic?

You raise a good point. And I guess this the appropriate time to say that I love one particular song by Busta Rhymes - "put your hands where my eyes can see" i think it's called.

the video is just bonkers, in a good way.

And i have Eminem CDs.

So I guess I don't hate ALL rap. Perhaps I should change my mantra to "I tend to listen to rap and country very rarely, but there are a few songs and artists that I dig." biggrin

well, so far i can say i don't like any classical opera, but i haven't heard enough of it to really judge it as a whole. shrug

there's not a whole lot of current hip-hop i enjoy, though i can't say i hate all current hip-hop because i looooove everything about the spank rock album. of course, that's probably considered some other genre altogether but it sounds like hip-hop to me.

No. I like taking showers and I don't have to know what "the struggle" is.

But to keep it musical: I'm not involved in a conscious, guilt-inspired cover-up to conciliate a lifestyle or "scene" and will still be listening to dance and retro music once muthafuckas around my age deem it "played out" in a few years -- like they will eventually.

This is pretty funny:

"...which means you run the risk of having to deal with excessive guilt, like the guilt one feels when you have to admit that you don't see why everyone is fussing over The Arcade Fire; this is a feeling that you want to avoid at all costs." falloff

I'm guilty of some of the things in that link, like buying my clothes at thrift stores. lol But I'm in my 30s now and have been doing that since I was 12, so

I will never, I repeat never endorse Yoko Ono though. razz

The more I read through this though, I more I recognize the signs. boxed

hating emo now is like hating the macarena. it's kinda like, well, DUH. unless you're someone's parents and you're at a wedding reception. then i guess hating emo is kind of revolutionary still. kind of like the macarena.

I can't remember if it's in the piece that mentions Wilco in Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs, but - if it's not - that's a great piece on country music, as well.

Oh, my list of things I don't like is still longer than anyone's you'll ever meet (with the possible exception of Fran Lebowitz), but it no longer automatically includes anything that's "commercial". lol
