Donna Summer's biggest career mistake: the "Supernatural Love" video (1984) http://www.youtube.com/wa...CTXMcT5_tE
I love Donna, but she sorta got lost in the 80s,with several lackluster singles and some truly awful videos."Supernatural Love" is the worst.

Her biggest mistake was finding Jesus and becoming boring musically at nearly the same time. [Edited 1/5/07 4:09am]

That comment about gay folk seemed to do her a fair bit of damage.

She denied she ever said it. Or it was taken out of context. Or she said it and regretted it. Or ... There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

She sued the magazine that published the comment and it was settled out of court. That doesn't necessarily prove that she didn't say it, but it always seemed like an unbelievable 180 from somebody who publicly acknowledged her gay fans on an album in the 70s. Just my take on it...

Also, the late Paul Jabara (who wrote one of her biggest hits,"Last Dance") was gay and he was a close friend of hers.

On the Donna Summer tribute site,"the rumor" reared it's ugly head again this week. The site moderator is spotlighting the 'Mistaken Identity' album and had this to say about the alleged comment...
A little background on "the rumor": This is a subject I hate to bring up on the site because I know it stirs up strong (and sometimes painful) emotions. But in light of things that were happening when 'Mistaken Identity' came out,I feel a little background information is appropriate. As many of you know, back in the mid 80s,Donna was accused of saying that AIDS was God's retribution against gays. Now,she NEVER made that statement and has consistently denied saying it,but that didn't stop New York Magazine from printing it in early 1991.Donna sued the magazine and consequently, interviews that would normally have focused on the new album ended up focusing on the lawsuit instead http://www.donna-tribute....rfever.htm

dear god, she looks completely fried in that video, her eyes look all glazed over.

what the hell was that? i had a feeling it was gonna be terrible from the caveman/cavewoman scene at the very beginning.

The director of this video should be shot

This is really strange...I had a dream about this video, only it was totally different (it had this storyline and Donna in different tacky eighties outfits). And it's funny because I didn't see this thread and haven't heard the song in a while. I have no idea what triggered it. It was pretty damn bad, but I think it was combination of a lot of things that hurt Donna's career. She never really did get into making consistently good videos, although most of them showed promise. I really dug the simple "Dinner With Gerswhin".

Okay, I feared watching this video. I've never seen it, and now that I have...
Did they film that shit on the leftover sets from Land of the Lost? Seriously, it looks like she picked up right where the video for Shannon's Give Me Tonight left off (another horrendously watchable video) and cast new people in the lead parts: Give Me Tonight ... [Edited 1/5/07 14:56pm]

[Edited 1/5/07 4:09am] what a silly thing to say. if her music became boring, why not leave it at that? i don't see the point in mentioning her religion unless you're aiming to insult her for coming into the religion at all.

Look, it's very simple. Donna found Jesus and STOPPED SINGING ABOUT SEX/SENSUALITY, denounced her old work for a while in the early 80's and GOT BORING. There is a direct connection between the stale music she started making ca. 1980 and her change in beliefs. She talks all about this in the Behind The Music special or whatever it was. Prince did the same thing. I'm not bashing the religion or their choices, but regarding the music it's just the way it is (unfortunately). It really is too bad Donna started to water her stuff down with The Wanderer. She was just coming off Bad Girls, one of the hottest albums of the decade, and she could have done some really awesome stuff in the 80's. Instead we got a few mediocre albums, and a few absolute embarrassments . [Edited 1/5/07 15:40pm]

She still sounded great but the lyrics got boring as hell in a lot of cases or just plain preachy. That being said, for the last 10 or so years with her one off singles from various projects, she's kicking major butt. "You're So Beautiful" is awesome!

That being said, for the last 10 or so years with her one off singles from various projects, she's kicking major butt. "You're So Beautiful" is awesome! I see it like this: she started trying to downplay the sensuality in her voice. It came naturally to her, with a voice like that. So it's sort of difficult to listen to the records of that period, where her vocals lack the spark they had in the 70's. It's sort of like when Madonna "learned" to sing and then never sang as well as she used to because it was too practiced and stilted instead of emotional.

I somewhat disagree. By the magazine settling out of court, it meant that: A. Donna's comments about her faith were taken out of context. OR B. The magazine or Donna's gay accuser lie on her.
