Quite possibly one of the funkiest jams not only of his career, but the whole Thriller album! Mike and Quincy threw down big time on this epic song. I love the "Mama-se, mama-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa" chant of the song. Ultra-funky!

And I'm so shortsighted, that I just assume everyone knows this album inside and out as I do.

When i listen to M.J, it`s usually the "Off the wall" album...
"Thriller" is a great album, but "Off the wall" sounds better to me.

I'd agree that 'Off the Wall' is a stronger album overall than 'Thriller'. 'Thriller' is to me more of a good collection of great singles and a couple of lesser songs, while OTW might be his best album of all imo.

nod Say it brotha! Off The Wall is one incredible album and it gives Thriller such a run for its money. OTW was his introduction to the wild life and I loved every minute of it. Easily its the best record he ever laid down.

Did you like "Off the Wall" because it was a R&B/Soul album while "Thriller" was a pop album?

I tend not to think of musical genres in that way. I treated each album as a complete work and imo think OTW to be a better record.

Soul, jazz, R&B, rock, classical - it's all just music to me! smile

Michael Jackson actually wrote Wanna Be Startin Somethin in 1979, for the Off The Wall album. He held the song back, and didn't decide to record it until the Thriller album.

Wanna Be Startin Somethin is one of my all time favorite Michael Jackson song. I loved his live performance of it on the 1988 leg of the Bad Tour.

Anyone like "Body" from the Jacksons "Victory" album?

The song sound just like "Wanna be startin` somethin`".

"Girl I Want Your Body/So Why Don't You Come Home With Me Now"?

I have loved this song from the first time I heard it. It's the type of song that makes you happy, makes you move and makes you sing along to, even with the silly lyrics. It's a pop masterpiece IMHO. I may dog MJ, but even I can't deny the genius of the stuff he did back in the 80's like Wanna Be Startin Somethin. Oh, I agree with the person who wondered why there wasn't a video for this song. I've wondered that for years and it most definetly deserved one. nod

So close, it's hard to pick an overall favorite. I just consider it a One-Two punch (same way I think of 1999/Purple Rain). The first one paved the way for the second one.

Wanna be startin` somethin' = easily one the brightest spots of his career. Michael wasn't 100% happy with the lyrics but I think it's a pretty damn perfect song.

Hey, when the whole Thriller album was finished and Mike heard the record, legend has it that he was unstatisfied with the whole album. He stormed out of the recording studio area in tears and it took Quincy to calm him!

GangstaFam

This is his best fast song and "Human Nature" is his best ballad.

It's just so freakishly full of energy and excitement, it can barely contain itself.

Wow. I just cant imagine this song or that album not being apart of my musical universe. I remember being a small child and seeing kids breakdance on street corners with this song blasting from boom boxes. Its a perfect pop jam and it is uniquely Michael, written exclusively by him.
