"with you all the way"- Not much different production wise from the New Edition version, but Shane Sutton's voice is alot better then Ralph's.

Well, there are two major problems I have with it:
1. At the risk of going all vainandy, why the hell is it so slow? I liked the contrast between the melancholy sound/lyrics and the fairly quick tempo. Madonna's version drags to the point of being boring.

2. Even worse, there aren't any harmonies! That's my favorite part of the song. Marvin's layered harmonies are exquisite; I wouldn't expect Madonna to use her own voice, but some backup singers would've helped with the "wall of sound" effect. It feels empty and lifeless without it (to me).

I revisit it every blue moon hoping to like it more, but it never grabs me. It's more disappointing than her other lackluster songs, because I really do love the song itself. shrug

Do you just hate Madonna in general? Cuz that would explain a lot.

Nope. Love her! She's easily one of the best singles artists in history. I loved her in the '80s, loved her in the '90s, and I think her last album is fantastic.

I'm probably the world's biggest fan of "Bad Girl." biggrin

Just had to put the Maddy version of IWY on, and I gotta say that I still love it. I think her voice sounds amazing on this, and the Massive Attack production really raises this song to the next level. The way the strings and synths just play off each other makes it such a tight song. Probably the best "Madonna does unrequited love" song, and she does those songs so well!

Plus, the video is so underrated. http://youtube.com/watch?v=IBvREAy0LRg

Great thread! I will add:

Southside Johnny's version of "All the Way Home" (technically, not a "cover", but it totally smokes Springsteen's version; in fact I'd go so far as to say this is one of the most beautiful records of all-time).

But Bruce's rendition of "Trapped" kicks Jimmy Cliff's in the ass. And (as much as I love Tom), I think I prefer Bruce's "Jersey Girl". The Boss' "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" is definitive, as well.

How 'bout The Bangles version of "Hazy Shade of Winter"? Or The Clash's "Pressure Drop"?

You should also check out John P. Strohm's version of "Somebody's Baby", Carmel's version of "It's All in the Game" and Marshall Crenshaw's version of "Valerie".

Joss Stone's "The Chokin' Kind" is excellent and - as much as it pains me to say it - I think Rod Stewart's solo version of "Ooh La-la" outdoes The Faces'. boxed

"Since I Lost My Baby" by Luther Vandross---Luther could take an old classic song and make it his own.The original version by The Temptations is good, but the remake is superior.

"Superstar" by Luther Vandross---His cover version kills the original version by the Carpenters.

"Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" by Aretha Franklin---It takes an amazing artist to out-do a Stevie Wonder original, but Aretha truly makes this song her own.

It's great, but I wouldn't call it an improvement over the Toots original

Marshall Crenshaw's version of "Valerie".
I'm a big MC fan, but I don't think I've heard this. Where is it from?

Ronnie Wood isn't 1/1000 the vocalist that Rod is, but his take on that song is just perfectly ragged to me.

hmmm Close, but I think I'm sticking with the Temps.

"Superstar" by Luther Vandross---His cover version kills the original version by the Carpenters.

IIRC, the Carpenters' version is also a cover.

"Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" by Aretha Franklin---It takes an amazing artist to out-do a Stevie Wonder original, but Aretha truly makes this song her own.

I think they're both perfect, so I'm calling it a tie. I absolutely love Stevie's vocal performance while Aretha sings it like it was written specifically for her. mushy

If you'd read my picks you would see that you are wrong on both accounts. razz The Carpenters version is a remake and it's superior to any other version. wink

Nothing tops the version by Luther hmph! He was arguably the best "remake artist" of all.

I think in general, I prefer original Luther songs to his remakes.

He even did an excellent remake of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin" music and his remake of Brenda Russell's "If Only For One Night" is amazing too.

Strangely enough,I hate his 1994 covers album 'Songs'.None of the remakes on this album are that impressive.

I haven't heard this, but I'm assuming it's a remake of the Fleetwood Mac song? I love that one. I actually like the Dixie Chicks remake, too.

I am a great admirer of Stevie Wonder, but I have to say that George Michaels's cover of "They Won't Go When I Go" is MUCH better than the original.

Several years ago,I read an interview with the writer of that song,Leon Ware, and he mentioned that he was really impressed with Madonna's version.
