Mos Def's New Album

picked it up yesterday and although it is officially a 2006 release, it is my favorite album of this year so far....sorry for the lame review but if you know Mos Def, you will like it.....if not, get it if you like real rap music

I'll check it out. I like his vibe and his poetry but what has he done musically in the past? I don't remember any jams from mos def. He is one of the most famous rappers but I don't know how he has gotten to be so popular. I've heard him do some nice cameo raps on other peoples stuff, but I've never heard anything from him in the past that got me excited. Like I said, I will check it out because you recommended it.

Is it anything like his last one, The New Danger because that one was INCONSISTENT?

Pretty much the same way, at least to me, on the first couple of listens.

It looks kinda like a bootleg (no cover art, clear jewelcase.)

eek The Black Star album with Talib Kweli and his first album (Black on Both Sides) are essential! nod

No cover art?!
confused

That just screams "illegally download me"

is it more bluesy or more hip hop?

Just picked it up today. So far, it's not bad, but I've only listened to the 1st half. I wil say off the bat that I'm so glad that he's doing more rapping on this one!

More straightforward on the hip-hop tip than The New Danger but only a few tracks have grabbed me thus far.

I love it so far and love the packaging. I mean who really buys cds anymore for the artwork or lyric booklets? It's a clear case with nothing but the cd inside which you can see through the case. Nothing else included. Nothing else needed. Feels like less of a concept album than his last one. More rapping and great samples. Great way to start off 2007.

i've heard 4 of the tracks and really liked what i heard. i almost ppicked it up at the airport today for 13.99 but then i figured if the airport's selling it for 13.99, best buy must be selling it for 9.99 or at least 11.99.

judging from this thread, its safe to say i should get it, right?

It got really creamed by Pitchfork, but I often disagree with those folks

i dig it. horns

maybe it's Mos's chaos & disorder for Geffen, i don't know, but i do know i'll listen to this way more than that mess P put out for Warner Bros.

i did see Mos on his New Danger tour and let me tell you, he's still one of the roughest MC's out there, despite the fact that True Magic sounds like it was recorded on an eight track. confused

if only Mos would've did some more stuff with Black Jack Johnson then this album may have been a dream come true. unfortunately, i know i'm in the minority when i say this.

I'm listening right now. First impression is that it's better than New Danger but not as good as the debut. I'm happy. But you're right about the production, kinda demo-ish sounding. Although maybe that's good?

I finished listening to it last night, but I'll need another listen before rendering an opinion. Though not as eclectic as The New Danger, Mos is still all over the place on this one. I wasn't feeling too many of the beats save the "hip hop remakes" on the album ("'Nolia Clap", "Liquid Swords"). However, his rapping is as on point as ever.
