wtf is this?

Sparkle (1976) Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, and Dwan Smith star as singing sisters from Harlem who hit it big as a pop trio in the first movie loosely inspired by the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes. This one is even looser that Dreamgirls, with a rags-to-riches soap opera script by Joel Schumacher and music by Curtis Mayfield. A pre-Miami Vice Philip Michael Thomas stars as the bad boy who makes good, Mary Alice, Dorian Harewood, and Tony King co-star, and Sam O'Steen directs. Details: Color, 98 mins, Warner, Widescreen anamorphic, 1.85:1. Supplements: Theatrical trailer; Bonus five-track Aretha Franklin CD: Sparkle, Hooked On Your Love, Look into Your Heart, Loving You Baby, Something He Can Feel. Audio: English (Dolby Digital 1.0). Optional English subtitles.

Who in the hell actually believed she wrote this song in the first place? The first time I heard it I thought "There's no way in hell she wrote this on her own." Its too complex for her. Anybody familiar with the DC records knows this. She probably changed a line or a couple of words just to get in on the writing credits. Writing is actually part of the real ugly side of the biz. I knew a female vocalist who used to take other peoples' songs and change words here and there, record them and take writing credits. Most times the writers were just happy to have something they did on a record. She never got sued. Scandalous.
And yes, "Sparkle" was the real "Dreamgirls".

i love this comment from goldderby's blog:

I'm glad the academy put their foot down. Her manager and father is a crook who got her writing and producing credits on the Destiny Child albums. She's about as literate as a retarded four year old so there's no way she came up with the lyrics of a whole song by herself. She probably came up with a few words and claimed she wrote the song.

You can not only forget about Beyonce Knowles winning an Oscar for best actress this year. (If you haven't heard, a certain ingenue keeps upstaging her throughout "Dreamgirls.") Now it looks like Beyonce won't win as a songwriter either — for "Listen," one of the original new tunes added to the original Broadway score. Officially, she's listed as one of the song's four writers, but the motion-picture academy only permits three names — max — as a credit.
The Oscars' songwriting branch has decided to qualify Henry Krieger, Anne Preven and Scott Cutler. No explanation is given for why Beyonce is excluded over the others. Is this just one of those cases of where the singer insisted upon having her name added to credits as part of her performance deal? Beyonce says "No!" In media interviews, she's often said that she was truly involved in its songwriting. Apparently, not to the extent as her three collaborators.

Have mercy. If you follow the links in that article, you'll see that Beyonce won a Grammy for Best R&B Song as co-writer of Crazy in Love, with this as her sole contribution to the song:

Got me lookin so crazy right now
Your love's got me lookin so crazy right now
Got me lookin so crazy right now your touch has
Got me lookin so crazy right now
Got me hoping you page me right now your kiss has
Got me hoping you save me right now
Lookin so crazy your love's got me lookin
Got me lookin so crazy your love

I knew she was one of the winners, but I didn't know that's what she contributed! falloff

Actually it was the bridge.
tho' I battled blind
love is a fate resigned
memories mar my mind
love it is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame
Love is a losing game

Well, Beyounce said a couple of weeks ago on TRL that she had very little to do with "Listen"...she just had some ideas & suggestion for the song. So, this shouldn't come as a dissapointment for her if that's true.

I am willing to bet she's disappointed. Beyonce has been saying that she wants to become the first Black woman to win an Oscar, a Grammy and a Tony Award. Winning an Oscar for Original Score is about the only way Beyonce will win an Oscar, because it certainly will not be in an acting catergory.

Too bad the whole thing was stolen from Amerie's "1 Thing", when daddy Knowles heard the track and thought it was cool so he had Sony shelve Ameries project so Beyonce could get her hands on that low life Rich Harrison. Both Rich Harrison and Matthew Knowles should have been sued, but hey Amerie at least wont have to worry about KARMA.

Let me just say this about Bouncy and the Dreamgirls.

Beyonce did an ok job in Dreamgirls and I think she does a good song singing Listen. I think she gets dogged unfairly when it comes to Dreamgirls. Yes we all loved Jennifer Hudson's performance. It was GREAT but I'm not doing the comparsion game. I think Beyonce played her part pretty good.
