I love them both and Madonna is great fun, but based solely on the quality of the music, I'd give an edge to She's So Unusual. I love the punky edge to Cyndi's first solo album. It was edgier in both image and sound. Still a pop album, but it was more adventurous. Madonna's pop album stuck close to the dancefloor; Cyndi's was dance friendly but it also rocked. I also think both produced an equal number of pop classics.
I remember everyone thinking Cyndi's career would thrive and Madonna would amount to little else than a flash in the pan. Cyndi certainly had the vocal chops and songwriting skills to back that up. Funny how things turn out.

Both are good albums.
I prefer Cyndi Lauper's, very good tracks. Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! REAL MUSIC by REAL MUSICIANS - Prince "I kind of wish there was a reason for Prince to make the site crash more" ~~ Ben |

A lot of good singles and filler on those two. "Borderline" is still one of Madonna's very best songs, but I have to give the nod to Cyndi. "All Through the Night" is my jam! "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Madge's debut. Cyndi's SSU is great for those first six tracks, but takes a dip in quality for the remainder of it, IMO. Madonna, on the other hand, has only one possible weak link with "I Know It".

I like them both.
After all this time,"She's So Unusual"is the one I go back and listen to more. my phone is heavy

I remember the same thing. She's So Unusual's popularity continued into 1985 and was being compared to Like A Virgin too.

Nothing on She's So Unusual is as weak as "I Know It".

Madonna is a more consistent listen, to me anyway. Cyndi's album loses steam by the time Witness starts.

Both Witness and I'll Kiss You are fun for me, especially the latter tune.

Both Witness and I'll Kiss You are fun for me, especially the latter tune. Yeah i never really liked anything after All through the Night, though I don't mind Yeah Yeah. I actually hold the "Madonna" album as one of her essentials along with Like a Prayer.

She's So Unusual is even more essential to Cyndi than Madonna is to Madonna.

Those are my two favorite Madonna albums, I just like She's So Unusual more than Madonna. In the end, I'd gladly listen to either.

Cyndi still wins. SSU has songs that are still relevent today. Madonna was a lot of fun,and still is... SSU is Cyndi's peak ..... imo my phone is heavy

Cyndi. Both of the albums have some crap tracks, so it's a matter of which good tracks you prefer. I don't listen past All Through The Night on SSU, but it doesn't matter since the first 6 songs are so strong. I love Time After Time, adore the Money Changes Everything cover, and appreciate the fact that Cyndi didn't fuck with the genders in When You Were Mine.

Kudos for the Prince cover "When You Were Mine".

That's why I like both those remakes. She made them her own without compromising anything at all about them.

No kidding, it was her biggest if not only mark in pop culture.

No kidding, it was her biggest if not only mark in pop culture. Definitely not her only. She has classic songs that are not on this album.

No kidding, it was her biggest if not only mark in pop culture. True Colors IMHO is her truest mark...how many freaken covers, soundtracks and commercials include this song? Space for sale...

and Roy Orbison proved what a songwriting legend she is by elevating "I Drove All Night" to a classic. Space for sale...

True Colors is probably one of her best-known songs. I'd rank it as a classic. And her cover of I Drove All Night is the definitive version.

This is a tough one! I listen to Madonna more to this day, but I sure as heck wore out my Cyndi tapes back in the day.
And I love ALL the songs on "She's So Unusual". "I'll Kiss You" is new wave insanity!

oopsies...i always thought Lauper wrote I Drove All Night but it looks like like Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. the same team who wrote Whitney's "So Emotional", Madonna's "Like A Virgin" and Lauper's "True Colors".
the song was originally recorded by Orbison, but without a record deal wasn't released until after Lauper released her version and had a hit (and after his death). Space for sale...
