Does everyone know Bootsy collins and his bro wrote 'sex machine'? I was reading an interview with bootsy and he said he cam up with the bass part nd his bro came up with the guitar bit. They didn't add them parts after brown wrote the song; they composed ther song and JB added grunts and lyrics.
Bootsy said at that age he didn't even dream of asking for writing credit.

Didn't know.
I got his first 3 solo albums on Warner Bros. I'm interested in Bootsy's James Brown era, but it is always just briefly mentioned as part of some Parliament Funkadelic pre-history.

This is true to a certain extend and nothing out of the ordinary. It's simply how JB worked. The band would mess around without him being there, and once he joined, they would show him what they came up with. JB then took it to the next level. But you go too far saying that Bootsy and Phelps "wrote" Sex Machine. They just came up with the basic groove.
None of the musicians ever got credit for this work, they simply were on payroll and this was part of their job. Only arrangers like Fred Wesley or Alfred Ellis received writer's credit. Sometimes Charles Bobbitt, Mr Brown's personal manager, received credits though he never wrote a song in his life. It was simply a way Mr Brown has found for rewarding his friend for his work. Bootsy recorded some deep funk tracks after him and Phelps left JB, for example under the name "Bootsey Phelps and the complete strangers". One of those great sides is the extremely rare "Fun in your thang (P.1)" on GAR (General American Records", 1972. I don't think it has ever been re-issued on CD. The 45 usually goes for about $300. Good stuff.
