He recorded "One More Chance", "Beautiful Girl", "The Way You Love Me", "We've Had Enough" and done some vocals on rap tracks for Shaq ("We Be Ballin") and Tempamental ("Gangsta"). All superb vocal performance. All of them a cut above anything he's ever done vocally. He sounded so fresh and matured on OMC, he was just beautiful (no other word to describe it) on "Beautiful Girl", and I don't think he's ever delivered as well as he did on WHE. He also did superb jobs on the couple of rap tracks he sung for, expecially "Gangsta". Will.I.Am who is working with Michael at the moment said his voice is the best it's ever been, and that seems very probable to me. He's released a few songs over the last few years where his voice is stunning and it just seems to be getting better and better everytime we hear a new vocal performance from him. He's definately better now that he was as a kid. [Edited 12/31/06 5:31am] What I joke...His vocal peak was during the 70s. He was still great during the 80s but he lost some of his skills during the 90s although he was still good.

I love Stevie and Michael.
Michael was better as a kid. Stevie is better as an adult. His range is better than Michael's plus his ad libs are out of this world. He can do the most incredible runs with his voice.

I prefer Michael. Michael has the most versatile voice of any entertainer. His voice is elastic. He can mold it into anything that he wants. I don't know what it is about his voice that is mesmerizing. He can take you to a whole other planet. I love Stevie and he was a great voice, but it is nothing "special". He sings great, but his voice doesn't affect me the way the Michael's does. Someone else said this and I agree: No one layers harmonies like MJ does. It is pure bliss to listen to his harmonies.

Stevie's voice nothing special? By the way, Michael has never been able to do the fast elastic runs the way Stevie does. Stevie's ability to improvise with his voice is unmatched in the pop/soulmusic. Only in Jazz and fusion have I heard anything at that level.

I dig Stevie, and I have lots of respect for him usually being in Michael's corner with media crap. (IE-Eminem's trashy video.) I also have mad respect for Stevie for being one of Michael's influences and for his talent. (Stevie is VERY talented. Enough said.)
All that being said though, I have to give this one to my boy. Michael wins for me. On both "Just Good Friends" and "Get It" I think Michael outshines Stevie vocally. I also agree with what has been said above about Michael's current vocal work being some of his best. While "Gangsta" isn't the hottest track of 2006, it is one of the best vocally. Michael's voice is so rich on that song. (Actually it is on every song.) I think Michael has one of those voices, that if he released an album of himself literally singing the phone book, some people would love to hear it. [Edited 12/31/06 21:37pm]

"Special" to me means something "different", that "special" quality that makes you go "Ahhh" or "Yeah"etc. I am not talking about the song, I am speaking of the VOICE-the inflections, the phrasing, the breathing, etc. Michael just has that "special" SOMETHING in his voice, IMO.

Well, there's at least one moment where it's hard to tell them apart. In the beginning of "You Haven't Done Nothin'," there's an "ow" that could be either of them. FTR, I think it's Stevie, but I'm not totally sure. Regardless of whom you picked, it's great that these two legends have worked together so many times: 1. You Haven't Done Nothin' 2. We Are the World 3. Get It 4. Just Good Friends Michael has also sung a few of Stevie's songs (w/ and w/o his brothers): 5. Don't Know Why I Love You 6. Never Had a Dream Come True 7. Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day 8. I Can't Help It and songs Stevie sang previously: 9. With a Child's Heart 10. Someday at Christmas 11. The Christmas Song 12. Well they're my top 2 favourite artists of all time. I won't say anything about power or who is greater now. Stevie in the 70s just blows me away. It's heaven to listen to when he really gets into it. However, Michael emotes just that tiny bit better and has the bigger impact on me personally.

Stevie also sounds great singing "I Can't Help It" at the NAACP. Personally, I hope these two work together again. At this point in history, we have a choice to make

1. You Haven't Done Nothin' 2. We Are the World 3. Get It 4. Just Good Friends You can add 'All I Do' to that list (which is my favourite of their colaborations). MJ sings backing vocals. I love both of them as vocalists. I just happen to slightly prefer Michael's voice.

What about Just Good Friends duet from Mike's 1987 album, Bad? I know it's kinda dated in some parts, but i've been digging this joint lately only because of the structure of their vocals. Check me out and add me on:

Both have developed annoying mannerisms over the years, but as far as naming two still-alive mainstream vocalists who aren't exactly capable of vocal acrobatics these two are the ones who have made the most interesting use of their voices.
I'll probably go for Jackson on the uptempo numbers, Stevie on slower.

Stevie Wonder hands down is a better vocalist than Michael. Actually, I'm not that impressed with Michael as a vocalist He's only OK.
But Stevie as a musican, vocalist, songwriter..He is amazing.

He has (had) the most amazing voice live and very soulful... Mike's vocals during the Bad tour were so impressive. and knowing the fact that he was dancing at the same time is even more amazing ...

DarlingDiana said: Definately Michael Jackson. He layers better than any other singer, he probably has the best range out of any male singer and his vocal coach puts his range up against Pavarotti. He has a very nice timbre. He's probably the most pitch-perfect pop singer ever.
This is exactly what I was thinking

they are both incredible, I can't choose one. I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE mj fan and have everything he's recorded so I want to say mj, but I don't want to be biased cause stevie is AMAZING at what he does too. The two sound amazing.
Oh and stevie covered gone too soon in the late 90's and got a grammy nomination for it, interesting fact eh? whoever said mj's layers are better than any other vocalist, I totally agree! [Edited 1/10/07 20:40pm] [Edited 1/10/07 20:41pm]
