I've always thought those two songs sounded exactly alike. It never bothered me, but then again I never thought LaFace's sound was all that original. Distinct, yes, but not original.

NEWSFLASH Tommy & Krazy: Those two tracks are THE same song! Typical production skills of Antonio "LA" Reid & Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds within life after The Deele. BTW, I love On Our Own way better.

Try pairing on our own with after 7's only mistake heat of the moment
Same song with different lyrics. Face was okay as a solo artist but he lost his funkiness after the deele. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I love all of those songs, but "Giving You the Benefit" would have to be my favorite. It made my top 5 Babyface Songs. "On Our Own" was in the top 20 and "Heat of the Moment" also fared pretty well. BTW, there are enough differences for me. For starters, I like the baseline in the Pebbles song better.
6 Degrees of Separation: After 7 sings the "work" backing vocals in "Giving You the Benefit" and Bobby's hit "Every Little Step" is about Pebbles. BTW, the possessive "its" doesn't have an apostrophe. [Edited 12/30/06 4:03am] "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Speaking of LaFace, WHY did I have Babyface's "Saturday" in my player the other day

I actually liked Staurday even though the lyrics seem a bit corny...

I especially liked it when they started the video version with the "I could be a trip but I choose not to" part. That's hot! Speaking of hot... mmm, Pebbles... "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

That's not fair. Same production techniques and instruments (ok, orchestra hit synth patch) but you could say the same about any "signature sound".
Why are we hating on Laface?

Why are we hating on Laface? I wanna retire the word "hating" from this forum. I like LaFace, but the fact is that those two songs sound exactly alike. I love Jam & Lewis, too and some of their songs also suffer from the same problem.

Why are we hating on Laface? Remember the thread starter KingKrazy? That little boy HATES black artists that make people dance too fast. THIS is the same dude that hated Oaktown's 357 for the same reason.

THIS is the same dude that hated Oaktown's 357 for the same reason. LOL How could he? It's one thing for Krazy to diss Kid'N Play. But 357 too? F*** that. I say let's make hip-hop danceable again!

KingKrazy is just a huge Bobby Brown fan.
As far as the songs being too similar, I think it helps that the vocalists are different genders. FWIW, the songs hit #1 on the R&B chart a little more than a year apart. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Other songs that sound like those 2:
Jermaine Jackson- you said you said (friggin' love that song) Laface cartel- reversal of a dog (off the "boomerang" OST) "you said you said (i'll be alright)....."

I wonder if LaFace's "cookie cutter style" is a reflection of their (namely BabyFace's) musical limitations on keyboard - for instance, maybe only being able to play in certain keys. That would certainly breed too much familarity. One of the last bands I played in "featured" a keyboard player who could only play in a few keys, mainly F#. Whenever we played the songs he wrote back to back, it sounded like one looonnnnggg song in F#... My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

? But once babyface ditched LA Reid, his albums got boring quickly. I think Babyface and Reid stopped working as partners around 1993. Laface never did do any newjack songs, but I guess you could call then newjack lite LOL. The stuff they did with Jermaine Jackson was pretty good.
