The Original Dreamgirls

Heard Jennifer Holliday on Wendy Williams 2day and thought, well, she doesn't seem bitter like the press made her to be, just matter-of-factly and territorial(which is her god given right considering the so few options she has between her hands).

Last time I checked, she doesn't have the luxury as those girls or even her co-stars(Sheryl Lee Ralph & Loretta Divine) but she seemed like a REAL vibrant person, funny and very candid about her days when she was a "Dreamgirl" wink Though its SO funny hearing that good ol' Sheryl Lee came to work one day only to find that her van became Jennifer's.

Miss Holliday was a hell raiser even back then,,,love those dames. And speaking of hell raising, their per4mance in Tony back in 1982 always get me EVERYTIME:

I wonder why they didn`t make the movie back then, or even later when Whitney Houston was offered the part.

It's so good it's INSANE! I'd rather see a big girl do her thang and make my jaw drop then some talentless tartlet flashing her waxed twat at me. Jennifer Holiday is an amazing singer and I cannot wait to see Jennifer Hudson do her thang in the movie!

Nice.

Has this song ever been covered by a guy? I'd love to hear a quiet cover of this, the way Jody covered Borderline.

According to Wendy Eddie Murphy's mother heard the interview with Jennifer and called him a bit upset about Jennifer not being included in anything. So he got her a ticket to the premiere later that evening. I hope someone offers her a recording contract.

Yeah I read in the paper about Jennifer Holliday being pissed about the movie too. She was angry because she wasn't asked to star (or sing) in the movie and wasn't sought out to give any input to the film.

I can kinda understand where she's coming from but at the same time I'm sure the directors (with all these major modern stars in the film) wanted a box office smash.

They've been trying to make this movie for years. In 1998,Warner Bros. were planning to make it,with Lauryn Hill as one of the stars. Those plans were cancelled when another musical--'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'--flopped at the box office.Movie studios are usually afraid to make musicals. It's risky for them.Last year, two heavily-hyped musicals ('Rent' and 'Idlewild') flopped,so who knows how 'Dreamgirls' is gonna do?

Yes, as the choir director. I didn't know it was her till I read her name in the credit.

She transfomly changed into a WHOLE different person when she lost all that "thick flesh".

I LOVE this play! Hopefully it might do a little better than the others managed to do . From my understanding, the company that owns the licensing rights to the musical waived all of the liscense fees for small theatres to perform Dreamgirls this year, in order to expand their audience and encourage new fans to go out & see the film.

In todays NY POST Liz Smith is reporting the following

Life is imitating art now. Jennifer Holiday who was so incredible onstage in Dreamgirls as the original Effie, has incurred the wrath of Paramount for being uncooperative and not helpful in publicizing the movie. Word came down to omit any photo of her from the publicity for the movie version..... Effie being pushed aside again and privatley singing And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going.

So that means we could have had Jennifer Holliday, Whitney Houston or Lauryn Hill, but ended up with Beyonce and an American idol winner. Not good.... disbelief

Maybe they should have made it with only girls from american idol. I know the perfect choice for the Diana part...
