what will become of Macy Gray??? I've been on a Macy kick all week & I'm trying to understand what happened w/ her last album, which didn't seem to make much noise (maybe I'm wrong, hope so). It has some really great songs on it: Boo, Hey Young World p2, Sweet Baby, Don't Come Around, Freak Like Me, Forgiveness. Hell, even Nutmeg Fantasy is okay.
If I'm not mistaken, they didn't release her version of Hey Young World - WHY??? If you're gonna bother to remake a street classic, at least put it on the radio - that was a wasted opportunity. Just sitting here reflecting on an album that seems to be forgotten...

I dig both albums, but many have seen the second album as her careers end. Perhaps it's because there aren't the anthems like "I Try" for mainstream.
Her remake of "Hey Young World" is my least favourite on "The id" actually and I like "Nutmeg Phantasy" a lot.

In the new issue of Vibe magazine (with Beyonce on the cover),there is an article on producers Andre Harris and Vidal Davis. These are the guys who produced Michael Jackson's excellent "Butterflies" song. They say that they are currently producing songs for Macy Gray. So,with these guys on board, she just might get her career back on track.
I like Macy. She's something different in the otherwise boring pop music world. With a strong,well-produced third CD,there is no reason why she can't become successful again. I'm more concerned about Remy Shand, who delivered a wonderful debut album earlier this year.He deserves more success than he's had so far. I think the Rick Dees Disco Duck Singing Voice is seen as a Novelty overall&I think turn the Lights out.Her Biggest Hit Sounded like a Lenny Kravitz throw-away which as it turns out does have a Lenny connection.I like Her Band Live.but She is a Wave type of Artist that once the wind Blows it's over IMHO.the worst that happen to Her was that She got Tagged a Pop Artist&She has been fighting like Madd to get back to the R&B Side.know there is Soul in Her work but Vocally I don't see Her Lasting.to me She is Somewhere between Mary J.Bliege&Me'ShellNedeocello but something is off to me with Her overall as a Artist. mistermaxxx

See, that's just the thing: her career shouldn't have to "get back on track" - how'd it get off??? I like her voice a lot. It's loaded with pain, honesty and whimsy all @ once. I really do think that folks who dismiss the quality of her voice so easily just haven't given it a fair chance. No, it's not the clear, ranging, "ordinary" voice we're used to from R&B singers - it's low & scruffy, deep & meaningful. Far from a novelty, but maybe it's the time we're in. I'm hearing Billie all day long - no place for that in this new millenium I guess... As far as her anthems, Sweet Baby reminds me of I Try, but it's not as strong so I see how folks could miss that. I'd say her anthem on this one is Don't Come Around, which is fantastic. Maybe the whole pop vs. r&b thing is to blame 'cause I have no idea why such a great album would be seen as a "career ender"...

See, that's just the thing: her career shouldn't have to "get back on track" - how'd it get off??? I think part of the problem lies with her image. In pop music, image is everything and let's face it,Macy has a crazy image in the minds of the record-buying public. After her first CD became a big hit,she appeared on Awards shows looking drunk and wearing hideous outfits. She did interviews where she admitted to being a drug user.Suddenly, less attention was beig paid to her music.I think this may have hurt the sales of her second CD. Either that,or she is just an unfortunate victim of the "sophomore jinx".Alanis Morrisette's second CD didn't sell that well either, but she bounced back the third time around.I wouldn't count Macy out just yet. AHH, now there's a thing I don't understand. What is with the love for Dionne Faris??? I don't get it. Loved her song from the Love Jones soundtrack, but I didn't get her album when it came out. Maybe it's got great stuff on it & I was but I couldn't stand "I Know What You're Doing" or whatever that single was that she had out. I definitely wasn't dropping $ on that! Tell me what I'm missing, MisterMaxxx... Yes, Macy probably did bug people out w/ the drug stuff. It's a shame - hopefully this little valley won't send her deeper into that stuff. I'm already worried she'll willingly turn her kids into orphans messing around w/ whatever drugs she's into...

Macys' career was off to a great start. She even dabbled in acting, with small cameos in 'Training Day' and 'Spider Man'.

I saw Macy Gray perform at a small venue in Pittsburgh before she blew up with her first cd.It was(at that point) the second best show I've ever been to.(The first was Bjork in Cleveland in 95')
Her performance was nothing short of astonishing. Funky, sexy, soulful, sophisticated, quirky and ON IT from beginning to end. I have The Id as well but it didn't seem to grab me like her debut.I like it but musically it seems more unfocused and IMO it tries too hard to approach too many different genres of music. I agree with Calhoun Square completely...her "career" has not been derailed or is in no way off track.Musically she's still searching...give her time...she's an enormous force to be reckon with.

mistermaxxx said: ask Mechell'e about How a Duck Voice can be cool for a minute&then almost get you forgotten??
Come on Maxxx - I think a comparison to MeChell'e (sp?) is a bit flip. MeChelle's voice wasn't really the baby voice she toyed with on record, it was full and somewhat strong (I guess). But she purposely played the novelty card so she got what she got. Besides, she may not have gotten anywhere sans Dre so I doubt she was meant to last anyway. Macy is no novelty. Her voice is unique in this day & age. Her music should be taken more serously than Disco duck & a whack Dre protegee... Now film is a different story - I think she got that small, distracting part in Training Day because of the whole novelty thing. Even the takes they used of her were particularly wacked out. Yea, I know she played a woman on drugs, but can Macy really act?? I need more proof. I wouldn't count SpiderMan since she was only seen performing onstage. Did she do something else that got cut out? If so, they usually cut things out for good reason...

It's funny I was just listening to her first album just a few days ago. I can see why some don't like her voice but I think it's unique and quirky.
1. Macy got accepted on Pop stations and black radio decided that her sound wasn't in their demographic. 2. She isn't singing about thug/gangsta life and being someone's "bitch". 3. Her music doesn't have the same Puffy/Timbaland/Neptunes/Darkchild, etc. beats 4. She isn't skinny and showing the crack of her ass in every video or awards show. 5. Her album came out right around the time of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and got lost in the patriotic shuffle. As far as Dionne Farris goes...see #'s 1-4 above. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I recently got to listen to rough mixes of all of the new material for Macy’s 3rd Album.
IMO, it is better tan the material on the Id. It’s even deeper, funkier, but I only hear 1 or 2 singles coming from it. It should be out late fall/ early winter.

When Macy had her 1st single out, I thought "Holy Sh*t! She's somethin' else" So, I immediately bought her album and proceeded 2 shake my head at what a shame it was that a voice and style like hers was wasted with such pop fluff songs and pop overproduction.
I didn't like that album. And very unlike me...I've 2 date, paid no attention 2 her 2nd release. So I can't comment on that. But I really think that with more roots/earthy production and some daring songwriting, she'd KILL!!! -------------------------------------------------

Like I said above her cover on second LP (Hey Young World) was my least favourite too.

Yeah thats my jam right there...also Freak Like Me. Her and Sunshine Anderson break it down. Regardless of what people say,Macy is the shit if only for her image. RnB needed some shake-up imho. One has to remember that it's only her second cd and you cant hit one out the park EVERY time(even though I think she did). Hell, her ass was just had a cameo in Spiderman and last year she was in Training Day. Macy aint goin nowhere.I want to meet her. Maybe the whole pop vs. r&b thing is to blame 'cause I have no idea why such a great album would be seen as a "career ender"...
She'll always have me to buy her output after the greatnes of The Id...can she survive off of one fans purchase of 15 dollars for one cd? "Climb in my fur."
