I use to hear that song. Its produced by Mr MOR Wally Afanasieff, who honed his skills with Bolton a year or so earlier. And I hate to say it, but it does sound like a bolton track, which is fair enough, as he was popular back then.

Still, it annoys me when people on here say bolton is shit yet like mariah carey's early stuff, where her first album (and the wally cuts on her second album) are dipped in MOR syrap like Bolton.

Mariah had better songs, a better voice, and knew how to express emotion.

Iam just stating, its still MOR and Mottola obviously got in Wally based on his work with Bolton. Infact, it's surprising no duet ever happened.

Personally I don't dig Mariah's voice. I admit she has a great voice, but I just don't like it. Technically, Mariah's voice probably is better, but her warbling kinda irritates me.

Iam quite surprised how big "hero" was aswell? Its got "disney film" written all over it, which is fine in some cases, bu its all too much for me.

She murdered "without you" on a scale that would do Bolton proud.

Funny that you should mention a Disney film. I had heard that Mariah had originally written "Hero" as a theme song to a movie of the same name that was released in 1992 and starred Dustin Hoffman, Geena Davis, and Andy Garcia. I believe that it was about a plane crash, and Dustin Hoffman's character saves Geena Davis' character and a bunch of other people from the burning wreckage, but he eventually disappears. When the news media goes around looking for the rescuer, Andy Garcia's character poses as the guy who rescued the victims from the plane. (Not to be confused with the far superior "Hero" movie with Jet Li that was released a few years ago.) Anyway, Mariah had originally written the song for that movie, and it was going to have been sung by Gloria Estefan, but the producers had decided to go along with another theme song, so it was initially scrapped. But Mariah loved the song so much that she sang it herself and put it on her "Music Box" album, and the rest is history. biggrin

But I digress. Here are my ten favorite songs by Mariah in no particular order:

Vision of Love
Always Be My Baby
Anytime You Need A Friend
Close My Eyes
Butterfly
Slipping Away
Petals
Fly Like A Bird
The Roof
We Belong Together

I've never believed that Hero BS, for the following reason:

"Hero" also faced one of the most infamous copyright plagiarism cases of all time. Christopher Selletti, a former limo driver for Sly Stone, said that the lyrics were based on a poem that he showed Stone in 1991 (and that he believed Stone had shown to Carey). Carey defended herself with entries from her personal lyrics notebook, but the lyrics from the notebook were dated six weeks after the film Hero had come out.

lol So either the "we-wrote-it-for-the-film" thing is just a piece of bullshit lore or she's lying.

Hero was originally written by Mariah to be sung by Gloria Estefan according to Mariah herself, but when Motolla heard the track he liked it a lot so he asked Mariah to keep it for herself.
