"The wiz" appreciation thread No, not the soundtrack to the Diana Ross/Michael Jackson movie, but the 1975 ORIGINAL cast album
I guess my favorite song from the album is "I was born on the day before yesterday", soulful and fun!! Stephanie Mills did a much better job with these songs than Diana Ross... She`s amazing here, not only on her signature song "Home", but also "Be a lion", "Soon as i get home" and of course "Ease on down the road" ALSO, Dee Dee Bridgewater does a great job with "If you believe"

You can say that again! Stephanie can belt. Ain't no way Diana could ever sing Home like she did.

They're great songs. | |

It`s funny how these "divas" always have to (try to) outsing each other BUT Ross got a little carried away when she "stole" ARETHA FRANKLIN`S "Call me" Have you heard it?

I have not but Aretha "stole" the soundtrack for Sparkle from that cast, so... It was a good steal but a steal no less.

The songs that were used in the movie wasn`t that impressive...

Watch a real pro even as a teenager! Such power in that voice and it hasn't changed a lick.

It`s too bad her motown cd is oop now, it`s a good album, but i don`t think it was very successful when it came out, despite her talent and strong material... Her disco version of "This empty place" beats Dionne Warwick`s original There`s another gem there, called "I took my strength from you", also written by Bacharach/David. I think it was released as a single...

I Took My Strength From You was a single. I refuse to believe that her version of This Empty Place was better than the original.

Have you heard it? I love Dionne Warwick`s Bacharach/David songs, but i think some of the songs were actually better covered by other artists. I`m especially thinking of Aretha Franklin`s "I say a little prayer" and Luther Vandross` "A house is not a home" I know Thelma Houston did a gospel/soul cover of "Don`t make me over", haven`t heard it though...

Love the MJ tune, so funky I can't remember the name and of course "Ease on Down" so amazing.
I watched it recently and the whole scene filed at the base of the WTC was just a little creepy to me now.

As for the broadway album, my mother used to play it during dinner back when we were living in the projects. Everything I hear about that album takes me back to my days in Harlem. It holds a sentimental value to me as well as my mother(she saw the actual play when she was in Jr.High). [Edited 12/27/06 10:54am]

. [Edited 12/27/06 10:56am] Better late than never Do yourself a favor though, stay away from the movie version coz after this you'll NEVER enjoy the movie. But then again, I'm a snob by nature, so don't take it from me

The Diana Ross/Michael Jackson movie? I kinda like that one.
The first part of the movie is very entertaining, but the rest seems, well, a little too long... Lena Horne is the best thing about the movie though.
