Recommend me some jazz please

Since a few years I've been listening to jazz music.
But I just don't know what albums I really should get.

I already own the most famous albums, but what's next?

I love Coltrane, Davis, Silver, Rollins, Tony Williams, Hancock, Evans, Monk, Mingus..

I don't like big band jazz..

Nice choice.

With Elvin Jones, Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson as bandmates, it'd be difficult to be anything but good.

Off the top of my head, here are a few:

Dexter Gordon "Go" (you may have this already - if not, get it, it's a classic!)

Kenny Burrell "Midnight Blue" (possibly the most tasteful jazz guitarist ever)

Jimmy Smith "Bashin'" - even if you don't like big band jazz - OK, if you really can't take big band jazz, get "Organ Grinder Swing'" or maybe "Retrospective" (great box set)

Kurt Elling "This Time It's Love" (superb vocal album by one of the best singers around - his version of "My Foolish Heart" is phenomenal!)

Jimmy Smith is very good, I got lots of his albums.

Thx for the recommendations. How about Keith Jarrett? I've seen some things and it looks like he's amazing. Köln Concert?

Art Blakey?

As amazing a player as Keith Jarrett is, I find his "unintentional" accompanying vocalisations irritating to the point of not being able to listen to a whole album!

I've also always had a soft spot for Michael Brecker's first album - I guess it's more fusion, but there are some great melodic ballads on there which I love.

Coming from a fan of the bebop era, here are some great primers:

Miles Davis -- Volume One (Blue Note)

Thelonious Monk -- Genius of Modern Music Vol. 2 (Blue Note)

Horace Silver -- Horace Silver Trio (Blue Note)

conventional wisdom gets it right on these essentials:

Miles Davis -- Kind of Blue

John Coltrane -- A Love Supreme

And a few of my personal faves:

Dexter Gordon -- One Flight Up

Wayne Shorter -- Speak No Evil

Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie -- Bird and Diz

Art Blakey -- Moanin'

And may I put a good word in for this brother, who released an exquisite jazz album in 2006.

nod I am looking forward to seeing him. Speaking of Mr. McBride, he has a nice James Brown tribute on his official website: http://www.christianmcbride.com/
