NO MORE GOLDFRAPP!!!! in advertisements

I swear throughout the year Goldfrapp's music has been in 6 ads....maybe more. Diet Coke,Nip/Tuck preview, Target, two phone commercials, HBO's Big Love. I like their music but damn if they're not shoving it down people's throats. If if were over a production company doing a commercial....there would be no way in hell I'd pick the same song as another commercial. "Ooh La La" and "Strict Machine" both were used twice. Target's been using "Fly Me Away" in their most recent ad, and I read where they're gonna use "Number 1" for another one of their holiday ads.

I've noticed that, too. I guess they're trying to milk the U.S. buzz they're getting for all it's worth. It's not everyday indie bands get that kind of exposure and placement , so I hope Allison can make some mortgage payments with this.

They keep getting this much exposure they won't be so indie anymore lol

I think it's too late. If you're in a TARGET ad, you're mainstream.

The whole "indie" label is kinda funny style lately. The Big 3 knows how much buzz and impact its having and they're jumping in on the shit. Then you've got a lot of "indie labels" with major label distro deals and are basically just sub-labels w/corp labels, so that kinda defeats the whole "indie" thing.

All Goldfrapp needs is some KISS-FM airplay, though, and they kiss it all goodbye.

Yeah.....well the minute I heard them in the Diet Coke commercial a few months back.....I kissed the indie label goodbye. lol

For me it's almost as if they sold out. Almost. Their music doesn't reflect it, but the numerous commercials out there do.

You know, I'm still on the fence about this. Would you say it's a label decision for an artists song to get saturated in ads or do the artists get a chance to sign their name on these calls?

This doesn't bother me at all. It's not like they are Pearl Jam and are backtracking from previously made anti-sellout statements. If all these deals means more money for more and better Goldfrapp releases then I'm all for it.

Nowadays, most of the newer artists don't have alot of longevity. So they gotta make the dollars before they fade away into oblivion. You can't really blame Goldfrapp.

exactly. besides, they might put the money the earn now to use in the
future to record more albums, even after the label refuses to release
stuff etc.

so it's a win situation for fans anyway.

if it gave prince the opportunity to release another indie album each
year, i'd gladly have all his commercial album tracks pop up in seven
commercials a month lol.

I agree. I think fewer and fewer indie bands have that 'anti-sellout' mentality. If you want to make a life-long career out of doing something you love, you are going to have take advantage of moments like this.

On the flipside, though...I'm going through now with Goldfrapp what I did with the Postal Service a few years back. It's like I rarely listen to the album because I just 'heard it'.

lol I actually don't. Well, not so much here in Holland. But I noticed when I was just in the U.S. recently that they were using their songs in ads. nod From reading this thread, it sounds like it's even worse now.

I've seen the "Number 1" commercial before the "Fly Me Away" one. The songs are chopped up in a way that you never hear the chorus. The Verizon commercial that used "Strict Machine" has since been replaced by Christina Aguilera's "Candyman" dancing jig razz

Christina's been a pop darling since the beginning of time, so her music in commercials are predicted. Maybe I'm being semi music snob. lol

Yeah, I'm not considering them sell outs.....I just hate when an artist is being overplayed. In a way I kinda think it's sad that it takes a popular phone commercial that's gonna draw in lots of young people to get into Goldfrapp's music.

I always thought the artist had some say in situations like this. I could be wrong though....I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of the music industry.
