Artist of the Millennium? "When I was a little boy growing up in Gary, Indiana," Jackson said softly, "I never dreamed of getting the Artist of the Millennium award."
Oh, how sincere Mr. Jackson. LOL. Tell us, when you were a little boy growing up in Gary, Indiana, was there an Artist of the Millennium Award to dream about? With regard of the validity of this award, your first album of the new millennium stinks. Long live the New Power Generation!

they just made up that award on the spot to give to him because it was his birthday, that's all.

I've actually since heard they took it back & that no one was meant to receive such an award. He was only supposed to get the cake...good thing he came wearing hockey shin guards, though. New York City is probably still pretty rough.

I think alot of MJ as a Artist but I don't get all these different type of Awards that MTV has to give out to Him all the time? anyway for me He is the M of MTV IMHO.without Him there would be no MTV.I'm talking about when that Network truly mattered not the Crums they are pushing out now as quality.of course they have to Give Him Something&so why not the "ICON" Award? but for some strange reason I don't think they will give Him it for quite some time. mistermaxxx

WTF was up with the shinguards, Mike?
Was he catching a game for the Sony softball team earlier? Afraid Britney was gonna' kick him? Bucking for work as a replacement player if the pros went on strike? And they call Prince a wierdo.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

IMO either MJ was in on the joke (he does like to send himself up eg. Men In Black 2. Leave Me Alone video etc)...or it was a very nasty prank by MTV. I think it was the latter. Over the years the MTV awards have become very meanspirited and tacky and even if you don't like MJ...he was one of the main artists who put that network on the map...and what they did to him was wrong!

the millenium thing was supposed to be a birthday present and not an award. either someone made a mistake or they did that on purpose. no wonder why the host was saying something like: we give millenium awards to everyone backstage.
either way, mj got up there and received a standing ovation and got something complimentry.

Even on the MJ boards his fans are admitting that he thought there was an award when there was no award. They are not going for this "it was all a joke thought up bu MJ & MTV".
He is clearly out of touch at times.

And it is so sad because this is FUCKING MICHAEL JACKSON. He is such an amazing american musical cultural figure. Name another pop music child star who went on to be even bigger success in their adulthood? He is the ultimate Motown creation. No matter what he does to his face or what stupid things he says or foolish story the press picks up this is still MICHAEL JACKSON.
Frank Sinatra, Elvis & Michael Jackson. There you have THE three american pop music figures of the 20th century. While we will contimue to gawk ,snicker & shudder at MJ he is still MICHAEL JACKSON.

Well if everyone fell for it, until something or someone brought it to everyone's attention, then that says a lot about what people think of him... [This message was edited Fri Aug 30 23:37:03 PDT 2002 by Starmist7]

It's funny how this whole thing is unclear but from what I heard that their wasn't an award but Michael thought there was one.
I agree that Michael is a part of music history, blah, blah, blah but he was turned out to be in my opinion regarding a few issues. I feel that everytime he is in trouble he then claims his African American hertiage and plays the race card. And this from a man who has done all he can to not look black. I've even read that Al Sharpton has separated himself from the comments MJ has made about Tommy of Sony because Al knows he isn't racist. Yes musically, MJ has accomplished many great things but he really needs to check himself.

there are many Black Artists in the Music Business that need to check themselves.it's ok to Call Brothers the N-Word&Call Sisters out of there Name left&right&whatnot? that is pure TOMMING IMHO!what the Hell Race Card? when you are Black you are dealt your hand period.folks forget MJ has battled alot in that Racist Business.Black Folks don't play no Card we are dealt the Hand period.MJ has His Issues no Doubt but what he said about Sony is true&these Other Plantation Labels.not to mention MJ took Care of His Family who Happens to be Black if I'm not Mistaken? the Buffon Rappers that speak on Destroying folks that look just like us are the worst to me.I agree that Michael is a part of music history, blah, blah, blah but he was turned out to be in my opinion regarding a few issues. Well duh? Yes we can speak on the rappers, heavy metal artist, ppl in every community jackin' it up and not doin' the right thing. The topic is MJ so I spoke my peace about MJ.
I could write a book about Hip Hop and it's stars, the good and the bad but I have more respect for the brothers and sisters in who are putting it down in Hip Hop more so than in pop music. Yes there is negative stuff that is being said and they should be accountable...as should MJ. To be honest...it's not even about accountablity (as I correct myself) but hypocrisy. Don't cry wolf when you trying to be one.

I remember in the mid-80s,there was this big thing going on where alot of prominent Black stars were accused of "selling out".Artists like Tina Turner,Whitney Houston,Prince,Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie were receiving alot of flack.I think Ebony or Jet did a lenghty article on this. They were being accused of pandering to pop(White) audiences, while ignoring their Black roots.
