Mynah Birds(Rick James & Neil Young) songs officially released!

If you're hip to Rick's history, this was the group he formed with Neil Young when he went AWOL from the Army and was living in Canada. The songs , It's My Time and Go On and Cry are now released on the box set called The Complete Motown Singles Volume 6:1966 by Hip-O select. I'm lucky enough to hear the demos from those sessions, and the songs are great. The group kinda reminds of the British Invasion groups that were big at the time:The Rolling Stones,Them,The Animals,The Who,etc.Btw, he was going by the name Ricky Matthews.

Awesome!! cool

The timing of this post if really uncanny, heh. I was just reading the Neil Young biography "Shakey" last night, and there is some good stuff in there about the Mynah Birds. Sounds like it was a very surreal scene!

I think Neil Young is the most open-minded musician I saw:

It takes courage to do an album like this

"Trans" has some great stuff on it. Alot of it was about his son Ben, but most didn't realize it at the time. The acoustic version of "transformer man" that he did on the MTV unplugged show gives me chills every time I hear it. Such a beautiful song.

I love "Sample and Hold" as well. Twisted song... great lyrics.

I might check that out but it doesn't sound like something I would be into. What I really want is that Great White Cane album.

Yeah i caught this tidbit on rick james behind the music several
years ago. It was funny because they had a song called the mynah bird hop.
I believe both guys were from buffalo,ny. I know rick james was for a fact.
I would love to listen to some of the other tracks for kicks.

There needs to be a muli-disc Rick James box set! It could include a ton of rarities, such as the Mynah Bird album and the Great White Cane album too.

Good stuff. They touched on some of Rick's background on the documentary/movie about Black Rock musicians a while ago.

Very nice topic. Yeah, I've been hip to this for years. Didn't think it would ever see the light of day though. Gotta get it. Thanx for the info.

Also, the unreleased "Kickin" album. They should release them along with the new one that has been upcoming for two years now. Hell, the only rare Rick James that would get released these days would be a rare greatest hits compilation. I wonder if K-Tel did one....that would be rare. lol

Rick sings lead on "Go On And Cry" cool box set if you need to start a motown collection or add on. But if not spare yourself just for these two cuts, visit a site and download for .99 cts. or whatever.

He also sings lead on I'll Wait Forever and I've Got You In My Soul from the unreleased studio cuts.Rick's vocal style sung in the manner of Mick Jagger or perhaps Phil May(Pretty Things).
