Mahalia Jackson - "Silent night"

Is anyone here familiar with this song? I think it`s by far the best rendition of "Silent night" and i consider it one of the all time classic christmas songs, up there with Nat "King" Cole`s beautiful "The christmas song"...

I grew up on it...

...My Grandmother used to play her version all the time.

Magical.

That album is a must for me this time of year. Phenomenal recording, and yes her rendition of Silent Night is among the best.

tA, remember your comment: "All I know is when listening to a piece of music (regardless of the genre) and the hairs on my arm stand up accompanied by "chicken skin", I know it's a keeper."

Well, that is what Mahalia Jackson's rendition of Silent Night does to me....

I grew up on it, too....

i picked up a few comp discs and have been taking it from there. my collection has grown since that thread. i now have enough of a classical section on my ipod to keep me occupied for a couple hours! it came in handy during finals! lol

I`m not that into classical music (probably because i`ve heard so little), but i do like the one i recommended, "In the hall of the mountain king".
It`s so dramatic, you feel it...

I didn`t know about this song before last year when i heard it on the radio. I`ve probably heard it before, but never paid any attention, maybe it`s because i`ve learned to appreciate music more. The radio is a great place to discover new music... lol

When you (ahem...we) were growing up, radio was the only place to discover new music...transistor radio in hand, held up to our ears for maximum clarity and sound.

Excepting, of course, the Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, and later Soul Train as viewed on our black & white TV with rabbit ears on the top.
