2 Of My Van Halen Favorites. Seeing the post about the Van Halen reunion tour just happened to remind me of a couple of my favorite tunes by the group that are not really talked about much as a whole.
The first one being 'Push Comes To Shove' off of their 'Fair Warning' album, which many fans feel to be their best and darkest release ever. I just love the overall groove that they have going on in this song(ive heard some describe it as disco, others as reggae, go figure!). However my favorite part of the song is easily Eddie's guitar solo which I think is one of his most underrated ever. Its just so melodic and has such a wonderful sound and tone to it. Very underrated song as a whole I believe. The second one is more well known from off of their '1984' album called 'I'll Wait'. Its got that very 80's sounding synth intro to it, but again the best part of the song for me is Eddie's great guitar solo in the middle of the song. Again I also feel that its one of his most underrated guitar solos ever. Im not really sure how to describe his solo in this one, just something that really grabs my attention with Eddie's playing on it. So these 2 songs are really great no doubt, but for me its Eddie's guitar playing and solos on them that really puts the songs over the top. What do you all think about these 2 songs that I have mentioned and about Eddie's playing in particular? I would love to know your thoughts on them. [Edited 12/22/06 5:05am] | |

The cuts for me from Fair Warning are "Mean Street" & "So This is Love", I love the whole album but these are the cuts that bring me back to playing the cd.
"Top Jimmy" & "Drop Dead Legs" are the 2 cuts from 1984 that are must listen too. "I'll Wait" was just to popular and played out for me. Oh yeah, I started a thread about Eddie playing Superstition with Randy Jackson, check it out http://www.youtube.com/wa...ed&search= | |

Everything off of the first album. Actually, I dig everything pre-Hagar. Even so, I'd watch EVH play with anyone, even freakin' Gary Cherone.

"Fair Warning" is underrated. On "Push Comes To Shove" Edward said in an interview that he was trying to sound like Allan Holdsworth.

[Edited 12/22/06 5:05am] Agreed with I'll Wait, it has my favourite Eddie solo too. The way it just drops in between the synths. Not a note is wasted, its brilliantly concise and it's restrain makes it all the better. It's not really flashy like a lot of his solos and it's definitely one of the most emotive. Tell you what as a fan of all VH incarnations. DLR is a showman with no other rivals, sammy was a very good guitarist and strong singer, but from a purely vocal perspective, Gary Cherone is the best they ever had.
Hearing him sing stuff off of Fair Warning with the enthusiasm of a true fan was a delite. I hope VH does the right thing by M.Anthony who is the VH vocal sound and has made leaps of improvement in bass playing over the years. He had to take a pay cut and bend over for the last tour and he did it for the fans. Eddie is crzy if he thinks without Michael its the same product. To me, Gary Cherone always seemed more suited for "Jesus Christ, Superstar" than VH OR Extreme. His hyperactive style always seemed at odds with the music. As far as his voice is concerned, he always seems more off-key than on...

Extreme were very VH influenced so it should have been a no brainer. But for some reason Gary's stage presence with VH was um, metro uh, not quite as testerone filled as Dave.

I just don't see this guy as a front man for any band. I just watched the Arseno Hall footage of Extreme and man did he suck as a singer. | |
