Same. And I actually like The Smiths.

Here's where I just don't understand that position.

I've always thought Kiss Me, Kiss Me. etc. was the "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" of cure albums. Great songs, but he album lacks something to me. I would have loved a slimmed down version of the album boxed

My favorite Cure albums in order are:

1) Head through the Door (The D&P of Cure albums lol )
2) Pornography (to me this is the "SOTT" of Cure albums)
3) Disintegration (the Rainbow Children of Cure albums)

I love their albums. I was a Cure fan long before liking the Smiths, but unlike the Smiths, there are always songs on cure Albums I simply have to skip. This isn't the case with a few Smiths albums--I can listen to them song-to-song, and then replay them still.

I do find comparing the two odd though...confuse It's like comparing Prince and MJ to me--each has their own talent, but they don't line up against each other well. shrug

You mean Head ON the Door. biggrin

Excellent question. When I was in Jr. High and High school during the 80's, out here in Los Angeles, KROQ was the station that played these two groups to DEATH.

i dig they way the bands looks influenced kids fashion sense in east l.a.... morrisey and smith clones are not uncommon to this day though the former appears more ... i think the pomp hair goes more with a cumbia, etc. than a nest

musically,i like the cure

"Head Through The Door" lol

I would consider that album their '1999' and 'Wish' their 'Diamonds And Pearls'.

Hmm...how far can we take this?

I'd say Kiss MeX3 is their PR (commerical breakthrough). or perhaps it's more of a SOTT (inspired patchwork)?

and is Disintegration their Parade (arty fan favourite)?

I'd say that Pornography is their Dirty Mind...or maybe it's their Controversy
hmmm

I have a long, thought out version of this. Maybe I'll post it later if I can find it.

I think Prince took a small step backwards from Dirty Mind to Controversy as did the Cure from Pornography to The Top (make that a BIG step backwards for The Cure).

The Smiths. My sister hipped me to them when I was a teen, so it's a familial thing.

"I am human and I need to be loved" song.

That one's "How Soon Is Now?"

That song is fundamental...

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen now,
Well, when exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

And while I like the Cure...I just don't see "Love Cats" (as cute as it is) being the kind of song that will grow with me for the rest of my life.

lol

the smith were GOOD. no doubt. great even, but they failed to remain relevent and folded pretty quickly.

the cure? my favorite band.
that is up until the last two albums which have been total jokes. utter crap. robert smith has an ego even bigger than p and he can't even string together a decent song anymore. still though...its about legacy and amazing fucking musicianship.
my faves are kiss me x3 and wish.
i like big sonic booms of albums. swirly and heavy (which is why i also love my bloody valentine).

the new cure dvd (festival 2005) is a MUST though. for all my bitching about robert smith being a has been, the shows were mind-blowing and porl back on guitar is a dream come true. that man is probably one of the most underrated guitarists ever- apart from someone like lindsay buckingham...

See thats what i don't like bout this thread, cause the smiths broke up almost 20 yrs ago.

Moz went solo and I think became more artistic and released some of his best work. I love that after the break up Moz got the joke bout the sad isolation lyrics and starting making very tongue in cheek references. I mean really WHO could be that depressed and lonely 24/7. Viva Hate and Bona Drag are great examples of his dark humor.

I mean can anyone take November Spawned a Monster seriously??

Bob has always kept the same musically style , always heavy, always thick, with a couple popish tunes thrown in here and there.

Like I stated in a earlier thread I love them both, to me you cant have one without the other, but Moz has grown more artistically.

I think Prince took a small step backwards from Dirty Mind to Controversy as did the Cure from Pornography to The Top (make that a BIG step backwards for The Cure).

They definitely correspond. I think they are both a step backwards in terms of quality, but in terms of opening up to different ideas, sounds, and styles I think both were huge steps forward. They were baby steps... but they were explorations. 1999 and later albums would not have been possible without Controvery IMHO, and The Top set the template for albums like Head on the Door and KMKMKM.

I listen to The Cure more by far... but I agree that they reached a certain point, and sorta stopped. They've basically just been regurgitating the same formula they used on "The Head on the Door" ever since. I love the albums, and they've done some great songs, but they haven't really broken any new ground.

But then, most artists don't. Not everyone is David Bowie cool

Quality was exactly what I meant. I agree 'Controversy' and 'The Top' were both necessary albums. I just listen to and prefer the albums that came before and after more.

the cure is my favorite band EVER EVER EVER and i used to be obsessed with robert smith but he has turned into a bloated clown-faced chuckle head who is egomaniacal and useless.

look at him. he looks like a...whats the term? graver?

he wears balloon pants and platform sneaker boots. christ.
it crushes my soul to even have to defend his music lately.
especially after tossing roger and teddy out of the band.

moz bores the life out of me but at least he's chosen to age gracefully!

Robert's always looked a mess, in a very cool way though nod , and Morrissey looks the same, just a bit older and grayer.
