Fresh-new talent alert :: Janelle Monae

::: from POCKETROCK

Janelle Monae

Now here's a P.Y.T. you should peep ASAP. I've posted about her before, but she's too good to ignore. Her name is Janelle Monae and she mixes spirited blends of jazzy soul with alt-hip hop undertones. Hailing from Kansas City, KS, she's a fresh talent tied to OutKast member Big Boi and his Purple Ribbon label. Debuting on the "Got Purp? Vol. II" comp and later getting featured in the film soundtrack for Idlewild, she's currently prepping for her upcoming solo LP entitled "Metropolis" which should debut sometime in '07.

One of her more recent tracks "Lettin' Go!" is worthy of giving a click. It has a feel-good Evelyn "Champagne" King- meets-Kelis-type vibe going on. It's bright, optimistic soul great for warming up dancefloors in the winter months. Definitely keep your ears open for her because she's sure to make more noise in the future.

Indeed we do. Her album was supposed to come out sometime in '06, yet keeps experiencing pushbacks. Hopefully '07 is the year.

The intro percussion on "Lettin Go" sorta reminded me of the demo for "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", or "Workin Day And Night" (but maybe it was the lyrics that reminded me). smile

I don't like every single thing you recommend Mara, but this chick was definitely worth a listen. thumbs up!

I've known about Janelle Monae for a few months. I am really digging her style. Lettin' Go is my jam. There are a couple of performance clips of her on youtube. Check them out.
